Wait until this summer. There will be no Empire Connection at all. All Albany and beyond trains will run in and out of GCT.

Amtrak has no facilities in GCT to service 48/49 Lake Shore train. To much $$$ needed to bring a crew of car cleaners, inspectors, machinists, commissary, baggage handlers etc from Penn to GCT to service that train.

That's right, and no playing Cary Grant in the dining car up the Hudson.
You'll transfer at Albany, which has full length high level platforms, for 3 months.

People will live. The Boston section has to go through that shit for numerous period of months or years over the last 15 years.

Too time consuming. Metro North also said No, with a capital N. Too disruptive to their operations, especially at New Rochelle.

We don't know what they will do with the normal NY cars or rearrange the consist. Boston Mechanical hates servicing the one sleeper. I doubt they will send all 3 there, as well as a diner.

It would have been do-able on weekends (as it was done during the empire connector switch replacement project a few years ago) but weekdays is a non-starter. Might have been a different story if reversing wasn't required.

Since the Lake Shore's equipment goes south on one day and back the next, it makes no sense to have differing operations weekends and weekdays, and the passengers would never understand

I think the real obstacles are the extra time and the need to have locomotives at both ends.

MNRR trains do the reversal at New Rochelle every day in the height of the AM and PM rush hours. In the AM, an empty train comes from GCT into the yard track north of New Rochelle, and quickly reverses and becomes a New Rochelle to GCT local.

In the PM, New Rochelle locals go into the same yard track, quickly reverse, and deadhead back to GCT for another load.

So outside of rush hour the same could be done with Amtrak trains, but it would require locomotives at both ends. And it's just a long detour.

I never paid much attention to the train tracks up near Albany, NY, and have not been back up there since the early '60s. That's interesting about the train station being in Rensselaer, and it's called the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station!

The difference is that when changing trains you have to take your luggage with you so a cross platform transfer is not easier for the passengers. As for buses, while passengers have to get off during refueling, their luggage can remain on the bus.

AMTK does not have service facilities (tracks, infrastructure and people) at GCT to handle sleepers and diners. Yes, the New York Central did it, but those facilities are long gone.

weekdays is a non-starter

Why?

The current departure out of Penn is 3:40 PM. Arrive in New Rochelle 4:10 PM, before rush hour. If you have an engine at both ends, you can get reversed in a few minutes, and only be taking up one of two northbound tracks (both of which platform) while you're doing it.

The arrival in Penn at 6:23 PM means you'd only get to New Rochelle about that time. Tail end of rush hour. But push back the whole schedule by an hour and again, no problem occupying a track for a few minutes.

One more train per day in each direction. No big deal outside of rush hour.

And they spent a load of money reconstructing New Rochelle Station (it used to be a traditional local station arrangement) so that it would be easier for southbound Amtrak trains to cross over.

Maybe... but not if they do not run those trains there.

In NYP, AMTK provides all of the car knockers for AMTK, NJT and LIRR. It is the station, not the railroad that provides those services in the station.

In GCT it would be MNCR who provides these services, and they have no services for sleepers and diners.

Indeed, even in NYP, those services are provided in Sunnyside and not in NYP itself.

It is at least another hour in running time. Not worth it. It would then have to leave NYPS at 240pm, and not get in until 730pm, if on time, which it is often not.

People will live. It is for only 3 months.

We have people transferring every night in Pittsburgh at midnight and 5am between the 2 trains. It can be easily remedied by thru coaches, as was done for 10 months in 1996. But the so-called advocates don't care, not since the Three Rivers came off 13 years ago.

Elsewhere I read that until the Empire connector, Amtrak only serviced the LSL on the Chicago end. They could go back to that.

In any case, temporarily bringing back the New England States for 3 months isn't that horrible.
