I'll see and raise!:)
Shown here is a 2nd ave El train, Queensbound in the late 1930s.

Sensational! Trains almost looked posed. And the clarity of the pic is superb. Thanx for the post.

Is that a a piece of railroad equipment in the background? On/near the NH tracks, past the El. It kinda looks like a horsecart..

Probably going to Willets Point Blvd. 2nd Ave-Astoria trains had 5 cars maximum, I believe.

I sit corrected. They were called johnny pumps in Woodside too. Forgetting its proper term is from having a seniority induced "wet brain" from all the times that I was the kid in that picture I guess:)!

This one is one of my faves. Rounding third & heading for home. Set of downtown bound Lo-Vs just left 161st River Ave Sta and the REAL Yankee Stadium in the early 1960s.

Correct in that it's a horsecart?
What's a horsecart doing in the South Bronx in '49? Surely the industrial operations in the area weren't using horses at the time??

I'm now imagining an old-timey railfan tourist ordering a Central Park horse-drawn carriage around the city on a romantic ride to see cool train stuff of 1949 :)

In the 50's there were ice delivery men using horse & carts. We'd run after them for a chunk of ice.

Familiar sight. Lovely sight. My friends & I would stand a block or so away, in a small lot, and watch the LoV 's blast out of the tunnel into daylight and the southbound trains zoom into the tunnel, motors roaring.

Hello Jim

I think this is an easy one -- it appears to be looking inbound (towards Queens Plaza part of the line) on the IRT Flushing Line EL around 1916-17 from, above 60th Street at the n/w (inbound) end of the Woodside Ave Express Station with its two island platforms -which will be built behind the photographer. Correct ?

Hello again Jim

In event you are not sure (but I think YOU KNOW the location) -- here is the proof.....

BELOW - The 1916 / 1917 era IRT Flushing Line EL construction photo -- looking inbound from above 60th street on the structure track girders just inbound from the 61st St/Woodside Express Station

BELOW -- Looking inbound from the westerly-inbound end of the 61st St-Woodside express station in 2003 with a Flushing bound train approaching -- nearly 90 years later !

Was there still ice delivery in the 1950s? It must have been the early '50s. I would have thought most people had electric refrigerators even by then. Maybe the ice men knew they were in a dying industry, and so it didn't pay to invest in motorized trucks.

I was born in '48, so it was early 50's for sure, but not TOO early. We even had cobble stone streets, some with car tracks still in 'em.
