Correct in that it's a horsecart? What's a horsecart doing in the South Bronx in '49? Surely the industrial operations in the area weren't using horses at the time?? I'm now imagining an old-timey railfan tourist ordering a Central Park horse-drawn carriage around the city on a romantic ride to see cool train stuff of 1949 :) -Rob |

My friends & I would stand a block or so away, in a small lot, and watch the LoV 's blast out of the tunnel into daylight and the southbound trains zoom into the tunnel, motors roaring. |

Hello JimI think this is an easy one -- it appears to be looking inbound (towards Queens Plaza part of the line) on the IRT Flushing Line EL around 1916-17 from, above 60th Street at the n/w (inbound) end of the Woodside Ave Express Station with its two island platforms -which will be built behind the photographer. Correct ? regards - Joe F |

Hello again JimIn event you are not sure (but I think YOU KNOW the location) -- here is the proof..... BELOW - The 1916 / 1917 era IRT Flushing Line EL construction photo -- looking inbound from above 60th street on the structure track girders just inbound from the 61st St/Woodside Express Station BELOW -- Looking inbound from the westerly-inbound end of the 61st St-Woodside express station in 2003 with a Flushing bound train approaching -- nearly 90 years later ! regards - Joe F |

It must have been the early '50s. I would have thought most people had electric refrigerators even by then. Maybe the ice men knew they were in a dying industry, and so it didn't pay to invest in motorized trucks. |
