BMT coal delivery car |

Posted by Trainman on Mon Feb 12 22:18:43 2018 Does anyone remember or have a photograph of the BMT coal delivery car? It was a car that was similar to a standard railroad hopper car except it had a large sliding doors in the center of the car on each side. I had seen the car operating on the West End elevated line. It was sandwiched between 2 elevated gate cars. It would service the el stations that had pot belly stoves in the waiting rooms. |

I saw the pictures on page 186 of Mr. Greller's book. Unfortunately they are not the car or cars I was referring to. It was during the late 1940s and sometimes on my way to school, I would cross the street under the West End elevated subway line. That's when I would see the coal delivery car between the 2 el gate cars. It was painted black and appeared to be converted from a standard railroad hopper car. It had a sliding door on each side of the car, in the center. There was apparently a regular wooden floor inside the car over the unused hopper doors at the bottom of the car. There were also a couple of workers riding inside the car next to the coal pile. |

They have a few vintage pic there. The only other thing I can think of is that, during WWII, the Federal Office Of Defense Transportation, sent a used hopper car from some other railroad to the Board of Transportation. Upon arrival, it was modified for the BMT in the way that you described. |

Trainman: Thanks to the research done my good friend the Elkeeper and Joe's excellent photograph I can provide a little more information about this car. It was built in 1927 by the Pressed Steel Car Company. It is listed on a 1961 roster as number 3070S and described as a "coal hopper". The car was re-numbered 20615 in 1965 and is now listed as a "flat car". It was again re-numbered to F-420 in 1966. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I searched the internet for this car and was about to give up. In addition to seeing this car on the West End elevated line, I saw it sitting by itself in the 36th Street yard. I also remember the H2 type subway couplers. The car may have been pulled by steeple cab engines 6 or 7 or work el cars using an adaptor on their Van Dorn type couplers. This would be a good car to model in O Gauge. Thanks again, Trainman Bob |

Dan, I don't know the specific date that electric heaters replaced the pot belly stoves. According to other members on Sub Chat, the coal delivery car was still on the roster in 1961 as a hopper and in 1965 was renumbered and listed as a flat car. John Lindsay was elected Mayor of New York City in 1965. He was always speaking of the evils of fossil fuels, meaning coal. I think that the stoves were gone before he was elected but I could be wrong. The pot belly stoves certainly made the waiting rooms much warmer then the electric heaters. Trainman, Bob. |

Hello Trainman - and GuysGlad to have solved that mystery for you ! Well, I have had this photo in my collection for probably 40, 50 years in my Coney island Yards photos scrapbooks pages. REAL paper pages with photos, 2 per page, on them It would be a great idea for an O Scale Model and easy to make -- I think I will make one -- I have another photo of this car in my scrap book pages - sitting in CI Yards at the south bumpers ends of the layup tracks. As taken by me from the Belt Parkway in March 1964. Here it is below,  Neg. # 2410 JHF / 3-1964 I guess you and I are the only ones who actually saw and remember this car. It was YOUR detailed description that immediately identified it to me. And I have the O Scale BMT EL Gate cars to place a model of it between also ! And now I have an overhead view of the top of the car ! regards - Joe F |
