“It’s actually equipped with onboard batteries similar to supercharged sports car you see out there that are battery powered,” McNeil explained.

What is the overall advtanage of using batteries that need to be replaced versus a wire they seem to like to string up until they fall down?

I would assume the batteries are there for backup power in the event of conventional power failure. I've read of sections of wireless streets in French cities where batteries are used to span the gap.

The TV person noted that the car didn't have a steering wheel. Well, duh.

Did anyone notice the PCC car in the background?

I misunderstood the article, I thought these were battery powered only.
Now I'm wondering what they even need the backup power for.

I did.

It doesn't look like a SEPTA PCC, it looks kinda wide.

The PCC has front and rear poles, it "might" be a San Francisco car in for rehab/overhaul.
