R1/9 modified for LIRR usage

Posted by FormerVanWyckBlvdUser on Fri Jan 12 16:58:29 2018

In the past, an R1/9 unit was modified to work on the LIRR, probably as a work train unit to tow stuck trains. There are pics around of it (I think it was 502). Whatever happened to that unique vehicle?

most of the photos I can find are of M-501 and M-502 are for the R44 tests.

Are you sure that was not the one that accompanied the R44 test ?

Some of the pictures (like for M501) show the units in use for the R44 testing on the LIRR.

What kind of modification would have been necessary?

I did say R1/9, which covers the R1, R4, R6, R7 and R9 units. According tot the pics I found at nycsubway.org, the units were renumbered from other units into the units I was tslking about.

Sheesh, TUNNELRAT, don't be so picky.
