The more we learn about Amtrak derailment the stranger it gets

Confirmed "facts" seem to be very few so far.

OK, the training was probably done badly. A management failure.

There still has to have been major distraction on the day of the accident. The engineer should have been saying, hey guys, where is that 30 mph curve? And there is no indication that he said, oh shit, there it is right ahead of us, let me hit the brakes as hard as I can.

even if Management pushed the training, it is still engineers job to stay safe, if you do not feel qualified , why was he doing 81.5 in a 79 ?? if training was at night, how come he did not recognize reflective signs not only posted at the speed restriction but a prescribed distance before the speed restriction, if night training was done, the accident occured before day break ??? something is missing, and its not just lack of training.

If he knew there was a 30MPH curve (a big IF), but had no clue where it was, then dilly-dally along at say 50MPH. Better to be scolded for losing 5 more minutes. Maybe with so many dignitaries on board and being a half hour late due to mechanical issues (Charger and the P42 had trouble communicating), he was trying to hide the fact he didn't know what he was doing.

Hmm.
One-time, fluke accidents do happen, but this was the first run of a new, publicized, high $$ route.

Perhaps the whole organization has an attitude problem. Maybe "I don't feel qualified" would be taken as "he's calling us out on blowing off their training and also being a bunch of jerks, so find a reason to fire him before someone asks us to actually do our job". Hacks and cronies HATE doing real work, it's against their religion.

the P42 is off line and needs no communication. and not many dignitaries were on onboard that first train did not even rate a Road foreman to ride it.

A big question that has stuck in my mind since the day of this accident is, who was doing PCR training for all of these crews? It seems apparent that even with several sets of eyes in that cab, none of them wwre sufficiently familiar with that section of the railroad to recognize the approaching sharp curve.

I was also under the impression that PCR training couldn't be done at night, period.

As it should be. I've heard that in Germany, getting an automobile driver's license requires several hours of on-the-road training after dark, in contrast to the US where it's usually done only in the daytime. It's no coincidence that German drivers have a reputation as the world's most skilled.

Interestingly, the route in question was marked with APSR and PSR signs which should have made things easier on less qualified crews. i wonder if it was foggy that morning.

Bigger question is did the engineer know there was a 30MPH kink in the mostly 79MPH ROW, even if not its exact location ? I suspect not.

I suspect not.

If so, that would be a massive deficiency in the training program.

Did the engineer survive the crash? (yes I know this is somewhere in the published reports, I can't sift through them)

Might be an issue if he only had training runs in the northbound direction?
