Looks like all passenger service was done by this point; only boxcars at the platforms.

It doesn't look as if there are any large ships at the Manhattan piers. This would have been when ocean shipping was changing over from break-bulk to containerization, which spelled the end of the Manhattan piers and the development of the huge facilities in Newark and Elizabeth.

Newark Bay's shipping channel is now well over double the natural depth of the harbor. If not for the PANY(NJ) refusing to build freight rail connections across the two rivers, then NYC's facilities could have been able to convert. Bad enough we are not a net exporter, thanks to going along with the Maoists.

Ferry service ended on March 25, 1959, so the photo obviously is after that date.

Train service ended after ferry service too, IINM.

Hard to believe that you used to be able to get a train from this station to Albany Union Station, but you could.

Even farther afield than that. At one point both West Shore and NYO&W originated through sleepers to Chicago from this station, using Wabash or Nickel Plate west of Buffalo.

Brooklyn is the natural deepest port on the east cost, some small shipping has returned to Red Hook, enough for about 3 or 4 container cranes but never see all of them in use at the same time.

No idea. Judging from the freight cars (looks like all 40' and 50' cars) and the stored passenger cars in the yard, I'd guess early 1960's.

The Manhattan piers would NOT have been able to convert. The land in Manhattan is simply too valuable for the space necessary for a proper container terminal.
