Ouch :(. Hopefully the two can be repaired. Worse yet, they need offside doors, which greatly reduces the pool of secondhand replacement units they can get.

A little far to ship, but Melbourne's older trams are a perfect match (single unarticulated unit, standard gauge, 600V catenary, doors on both sides at the front and center of the car).

Weight's the problem. Otherwise, the PCC's would have been replaced by 7's long ago.

Hmm... close. According to Wikipedia, the heaviest PCC is 42,000 lbs while the "A Class" trams are 49,000 lbs (had to convert "long tons").

Upgrade the line (doesn't it just need some bridge replacement?) and send three Type 8s over there (type 7s are not handicap accessible). The Mattapan fleet was supposed to be 10 PCCs, they are down to half.

The PCCs aren't ADA compliant either. High platforms and a few of the Blue cars which have pans would do the trick.

The only reason that those PCCs are painted orange is that someone at the MBTA wanted them restored to their original Boston El appearance.

3265 and 3234 have been deadlined at Mattapan for several years. Comparing your pictures to ones I took back in 2013, it appears their primary purpose is a parts source to keep the rest of the fleet in operation. Doors seem to be an especially hot commodity!

They are listed at the NE Transit page as being out of service, awaiting parts. Maybe the current situation will force MBTA to put these cars back together, using parts from the cars involved in the collision if necessary.

All the more reason to raise the platforms and bring over pan equipped Blue Line cars--IIRC they are scheduled to get new cars so a few more as an add on should be doable. Cost of raising platforms should be recouped in have one less class of spares to stock and inventory. And the line becomes ADA compliant.

The blue line had all their cars replaced a few years ago. The ones on the docket for replacement now are orange and red.

The green line on the other hand is getting new "type 9" cars for the service expansion, this is an excellent time to get a few extra for the Mattapan line.

IINM the Blue and Orange are dimensionally the same merely 3rd railor catenary. As to "Type 9" will these be RORO at low platforms? When you sayservice expansion, is this the fabled Lechmere into omerville oute now due in 202x and at astronomical cost overruns? I have friends who live near where it might go (depending on how much "value engineering" the kleptocrats force. The issue is whether they or I willbe mobile enough to use it when it opens. Blue line cars are shorter (52 feet? vs 60 feet) than orange line ones. The Type 9 will be built by CAF and delivered by the end of this year, apparently. The interior looks very similar to a type 8, if this presentation is believed.

The problem with Green Line cars is that they're too heavy for one of the bridges on the Ashmont-Mattapan line - that's why they still use the PCCs there in the first place.

If so, something which needs to get fixed. Much as I love PCCs, there will come a day when they are beyond the "100 year old horse drawn shay". and the inadequate bridge has out run its sell by date for steel.
