Posted by Joe on Sun Dec 31 12:55:30 2017 It's New Year's Eve, so I tried to find photos of Times Square on the internet. The one linked below, dated January 1938, has several items of interest.The B-Broadway line has not yet received the 500's, the center-exit cars. The 300 moving north has not yet received the cream V above the headlight. The front is a solid TARS red. The V, I believe, predated WW2, so it was not a victory symbol, merely a design change that is a good clue in photos. Northbound on Seventh Avenue, is that a Yellow Coach? It's in front of a Child's restaurant offering 60-cent dinners. Our parents brought us on the IRT to Times Square for New Year's Eve, 1950. Streetcars were gone a few years. Yes, that's a NYC Omnibus Yellow Coach 728 model stopping in front of the Child's Restaurant. It could be on either the #6, 7, 8, or 9 routes. The #7 route still operates today but goes NB on 6th Ave. Other three routes are gone - #6 and #8 have been combined with other lines due to one-way avenue patterns, and the #9 was at best a part time route when it operated (7th Ave. betw 59th and 8th/9th Sts., and then E/W on 8th and 9th to/from Cooper Square). |
