New turnstile technology being tested at 34th/7th

Posted by Allan on Sun Dec 17 15:10:52 2017

Two of the turnstiles at the entrance to the 1,2,3 trains (just past the LIRR ticket windows on the lower mezzanine ant Penn Station) have been fitted with new technology (all they did was remove the top portion where you swipe the MC and placed a new unit in its place).

While it still has a place to swipe the MC it also has a window reader (best way I can describe it) so as to be able to read an image on a smartphone/iphone etc screen to trigger the turnstile.

Along side the top are a series of lights which light up green when the MC is accepted (probably lights up red when the card doesn't work).

There is also a newer screen showing the amount paid and remaining on the MC (the old screen is still in place)

Cool...
No need to change over the system to the Port Authority type recepticals.
The Tap and Go readers are fine...
Funny.. CDTA had them on buses for years now, and the MTA is just now playing catch up.

I thought there was something odd about the turnstiles at 34/7 when I was there last week.

The 34th/8th entrance, pair of turnstiles directly under the northbound express track at 32st also has them.

Sounds like what SEPTA is using, and eventually will be on its entire system.

It won't be long before that window reader is adapted to read fingerprints.

CDTA had 306 buses. The MTA must have no less than 10,000 fare readers of various kinds.

Actually, it is true. Your finger print will be your ID card, your credit card, your railway ticket, and your primary nose picker.

For relatively normal activities like train travel, I cant see a fingerprint being used as an ID. If the person is injured in such a way he/she can’t display it there would be problems like a few years ago when my right arm was in a cast due to a broken wrist.

It kinda already is. It's the unlocker to my phone which allows the NFC apps to function.

I noticed this at the turnstiles at the 34th & 8th Ave station.

But the turnstile doesn't read your fingerprint like Andrew Saucci claimed it would.

It *COULD* if you choose to use it that way. Otherwise you could use other media.

After all NYC is a tourist destination. Not everybody is going to sing up for the gee-wizz gismos.

Not to mention the fact that such tactics are so incredibly invasive it turns my stomach.
It's sad as heck that today, you are decidedly under surveillance from the moment you step out your door. Even inside your doors.
The fingerprint scanner on transportation entry/exit points I have heard of before. It is not a new idea. It just hasn't been implemented Here, yet.

Fear is control.
