"The Grand Tour" Race From New York to Niagara Falls

Posted by The Silence on Thu Dec 7 18:14:31 2017

In a bit borrowed from their days on Top Gear, episode 2 of the new season (next week dec 14/15*) will feature the return of "Car Vs Public Transportation Race"

It one corner: Jeremy Clarkson in a Ford GT (the modern reincarnation of the classic GT 40 endurance racer which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times in a row in the late 1960s)

In the other: James May having to drag an injured Richard Hammond on presumably Amtrak.

The challenge, get across New York State from The City to Niagara Falls.

*episodes premier on Amazon video at midnight GMT on Friday, which is 7 Eastern 4 pacific on Thursday (but sometimes will air sooner).

There is a split second shot in the opening title sequence of Hammond and May on the lower level platform at 7th Ave/53rd Street, so Yes, the subway is going to be involved.

Ugh, I forgot about NY-17/I-86. Amtrak doesn't have a chance - he could drive the speed limit (55/65) the entire way taking leisurely 45 minute meal breaks and probably beat the train.

If he took the Thruway on the other hand, it might have been closer...

I would have said that the producers should have checked on Forums like these to figure out competitive races, however they are pretty much all staged these days to make them "close", both on Top Gear and Top Gear Prime.

I think Boston Logan to Times Square would be an interesting race.

Then the I 80 - I 380- I 81 method of thruway avoidance

E train from 7/53rd to Sutphin Blvd
