News to me that parts of the London tram network used slot pickup!

I have a book on London’s trams that indicates that conduit was used. There were only a handful of cities that outlawed overhead wires including, NY (Manhattan only), DC Budapest and London.

I saw the entrance to the tunnel in that video when I visited London, too. Still had the tracks with the conduit and all.

Here's a link to all you wanted to know about London's conduit operation.

London's tram tracks played a supporting role in the classic British film, Genevieve.

Wonderful, and very sad video. Thanks for sharing this.

I wonder why people thought converting from electricity to diesel was "progress"...

I also notice that the sign indicated that "July 5" would be the last day. I would have expected it to say "5 July"..

Don't they still operate double-deck trams in Hong Kong?

Yes, Hong Kong still has quite a busy tram system.

I wonder why people thought converting from electricity to diesel was "progress"

Because progressives told them so, and progressives also wanted total control of all street infrastructure; the progressives in government weren't getting tax money from street rails and electrification infrastructure (i.e. once they took it over from private operators), but they were getting it from gasoline and diesel fuel taxes, which they promptly absconded to spend on "social programs" (i.e. de-facto vote-buying schemes et al).

It’s interesting that while London’s heavy rail rapid transit is called the “Underground,” the term “subway” is used for the below ground light rail system.
