😂... Yes..
Yes it does.
The leaking sewer, the standing piles of 💩 along the walls, and the trash all add a lovely coating of grime you won't find anywhere else. 👩💬Cool💫

Edwards... I don't understand all the hieroglyphics at the end of your post. If those high heel shoes at the end are meant to reignite the unfounded vicious rumors that I cross dress when I post here, I'll have to consult with my attorney.

The MTA is deathly afraid to attempt to fix its many problems. Some of those sewer and water lines go back to 1913.

Looks like as many of the light fixtures were missing- but at this point, they probably hadn't been installed. Today, where you see a wire hanging out of the receptacle, it's because they've broken off and the spot not covered up....!!

Elevated style third rail too. The wall sconce fixtures not yet installed.

Now come up with a photo of LIRR MP-41's in that station and give us something to talk about. :-)

Makes one wonder if that station in particular, and the Nassau Street loop in general, qualifies as something of a "red-headed stepchild" of the subway system in terms of how it's been treated since its opening. (I'm thinking specifically the Bowery station and that whole business of the abandoned tracks.)

I am surprised that Chambers St and the Bowery Stations are not restored to their former glory because both Downtown and the Bowery are such Hipster Trendy areas. Perhaps they use Uber.

No, that is not it at all. It is only the filth that is holding the wals in place as it is.

Besides the MTA is not responsible for leaking sewers. Somebody will have to fix the sewers first.

IIRC Chambers street is NEAR Canal Street.
IIRC Canal Street was a CANAL before it was a street.
So what they did in fact was to build a subway in the bottom of a canal.

Chambers Street is like onto it (I suppose)in the bottom of a primordial swamp with swamp ooze oozing in by the bucket full, running down the walls, onto the floors and bu to your ankles.

(It doesnt rhyme now, but wait until the tide come in.)

Why isn't the adjacent #6 train station, separated only by a phony wall, not as disgusting ?

MP41 cars were 51' long. I don't think they ever anticipated an MP54 ever operating via the Chestnut Street connection to there.

No, the leaks come from water and sewer lines under the streets. Some may predate the 1913 opening of the station. Another possible source is the basement walls and/or floors of the NYC Municipal Building. Part of the roof of Chambers St station was lowered for a storage are under the NU Municipal Bldg. That area is now 70+ years old.

Actually when the Essex St master tower was installed, it was intended to break down the wall at the south (RR north) end of Canal St and have all 4 tks go through to Chambers St and completely realign the former H tracks into J1 and J3 tk into Canal. It was that way on the Essex model board for years until the current alignment was made. I remember years ago going to a GO meeting where one of the high ranking suits mentioned that the new MTA management imported from the "Toonerville Trolley” systems in other cities was thinking in terms of eliminating all switches and abandoning all trackage that didn’t see 24/7 use. As can bee seen, many of those proposals have ben implemented.

Those platforms as built were a lot shorter than they are today and in stations where new tile has not completely replaced the old, you can see the various platform extensions.

They did a nice job at the north end of Union Square, tiling what were once the outer tunnel walls.

Yes

From what I understand, that tiled wall wasn't put there to hide the disused platform and staircases, but the station wall had to be sacrificed so the #6 Brooklyn Bridge station adjacent platform could be extended.

I've heard/read the same thing. I might have read it in the David Rogoff fantrip booklet for the AB fantrip October 1966, or in one of his construction histories in the NY Div. Bulletin. I do remember he spent some time discussing Chambers St. station in the booklet.
