Tuscarora Almanac for December 7

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Thu Dec 7 15:15:38 2017

Tuscarora Almanac - December 7, 1962 - The Book of Wrecks

Manhattan, New York
New York City Transit Authority – IND Division
Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation

During the early morning hours of December 7, 1962 a water-main located at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue ruptured and flooded the tracks of the Sixth Avenue Lines of both the IND Division and PATH. Subway service was suspended between 34th Street-Herald Square and West 4 Street. PATH service was suspended between 33rd Street and Hoboken.

The following emergency services were placed into effect.

Routes A, E, GG and HH operated normally.

Route AA 8th Avenue Local would continue to operate between 168th Street – Broadway and Hudson Terminal (today’s World Trade Center), but would run only during the rush hours.

Route BB 6th Avenue Local continued to operate between 168th Street – Broadway and 34th Street – 6th Avenue but would operate during non-rush hours only.

Route C 8th Avenue Express would operate between Bedford Park Boulevard and 34th Street – 6th Avenue during rush hours and running express on the Grand Concourse Line in the direction of traffic and in both directions on the Eighth Avenue Line between 145th Street and 59th Street.

Route CC 8th Avenue Local was suspended.

Route D 6th Avenue Express continued to operate between 205th Street and Coney Island (Via the Rutgers Street Tunnel) but would operate during non-rush hours only running via the local tracks of the Eighth Avenue Line between 59th Street and West 4th Street. This service would operate express between 145th Street and 59th Street.

Route DD 6th Avenue Local would operate between 205th Street and Coney Island (Via the Rutgers Street Tunnel) during rush hours only running via the local tracks of the Eighth Avenue Line between 59th Street and West 4th Street.

Route F 6th Avenue Express operated between 179th Street – Jamaica and 34th Street – 6th Avenue (Via the 53 Street Tunnel) at all times.

It was the first time that the C had operated since 1949 and the first and only time that the DD ever ran. It was a very nice early Christmas present for rail-fans of the day.

Normal service was restored on December 24, 1962.

Back in 1998 I asked in SubTalk which of the original IND route designations were actually used in service. I think DD was only used for this one occurrence (the water main break)and never before or after.

Bob: That's right. The DD was used one time only and the FF never.

And the DD train was misnamed since it ran down 8th Av and not 6th. The C was also misnamed. The C train should have retained the D designation and the DD should have been called a CC with the non rush hour service carrying the D. I know that most of the info on this forum indicates it was a water main break that caused the problem, but I seem to recall that the problem was a weakening of the subway infrastructure caused by blasting for the deep level express tunnels.
