[PHOTOS] P.A.T.H. From The Past |
|
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Dec 7 09:15:34 2017 Leaving Newark (NJ) station - July 1979 Class K work train at Journal Square (NJ) May 1979. Maybe those trucks seen here wound up on SEPTA Almond Joy cars when they served the Norristown Line (ex P&W). Interior of Class K or MP-51. Resembling your IRT SMEE car a bit but with Lo-V door arrangement, PCC style bulleye lighting and air conditioning. They rode nicely, were fast and the A/C kicked butt. Oct. 1979 Class K cars in 33rd St station (NY) July 1979. Back when you took a picture and no one asked you to put your camera away. I wanted to take a photo of the abandoned 19th St station (NY), but since it was not accessible to the public, what to do? So on a 33rd St bound train, I put the camera, lens barrel flush with the picture window and with flash at the ready, pressed the shutter and took a gamble. After a few tries, I hit pay dirt and caught this image. The ad for Statler Tissues intact, is frozen in time. I don't know who the baseball player is, do you? I don't know why so many missing wall tiles, perhaps removed to replace tiles in other stations. September 1978 |

As a railfan it annoys me that PATH one from the very best to the very worst in terms of enjoying the ride because of no railfan window. |

Still built with bullseye incandescent lighting in 1958, yet progressive enough to have air conditioning, beating NYCTA to it by 10 years. To this day, I can't understand why H&M went with incandescent lighting instead of opting for fluorescent. Incandescent lighting with modern air conditioning on new equipment is a bit off. Maybe the H&M was penny pinching ? Bill Newkirk |

They had been in bankruptcy since 1954, and would stay that way up to the Port Authority's purchase of their system and administration of PATH in 1962. So yes, penny-pinching. The same reason why only one end of the World's Fair cars built for the IRT in 1938-39 had motorman's cabs. |

I knew someone was going to make that reference...I can’t look at old PATH photos without him cropping up in my mind. Wherever you are, ya jackass, thanks for ruining a nice chunck of New York transportation history for me. |

That's a generic ballplayer. That would seem accurate. Use a well known player wearing a team uniform and that ad just cost even more. The baseball player's face in the ad looked familiar to me.
