The name "Fairfield Metro" has to one one of the stupidest station names ever. It's not named Metro because it's the metropolitan or downtown station in Fairfield - that's another one. It's not named Metro because it's a metro station - it's not. It's not named Metro because it's a Metro-North station - there are 2 others in Fairfield. It's only named Metro because some developer built something there called Metro-Center. By rights it should be called Fairfield East or Black Rock.

'Southeast' is pretty weird also..

Of course, there's always what happened when MN opened the new, larger Middletown Station 20 some odd years ago - renaming it 'Middletown/Town of Wallkill' a name I have never heard it called by ANYone - passengers, conductors, any published schedule; even the FIND system, when conductors remember to keep turned on west of Suffern, only calls it "Middletown"

Lou: How about Salisbury Mills / Cornwall. I used to live in Cornwall and the station sure as hell isn't there.

Larry, RedbirdR33

PS: It is a nice station. I frequently use it for my trips to the city.

The "Willets Point" station was originally "Willets Point Ave" (later Blvd). Willets Point Ave ran from the general location of the station to Willets Point.

Yes, Willets Point is about 4 miles from the station in Bayside. It is now Fort Totten.

This may be a stretch but the BMT Astoria line trains show Ditmars Blvd as the destination. The line does not reach Ditmars but ends about a half a block from the Blvd.

It is a stretch - you have to stretch your legs to get to the station from Ditmars.

I always wondered why the station was not built river Ditmars. Transferring from the Q69 bus is a real pain.

Correct. From what I understand it was supposed to be in or near Woodstock, but the local officials decided they didn’t want hundreds or thousands of pot smoking hippies infiltrating the town, so they pulled the plug. Fortunately, a family named Yazgur whom owned a farm near Bethel, NY not too far away offered the use of their property for the festival.

Several avenues in Queens were upgraded to boulevards over the years. Among them are Ditmars, Astoria, Junction and Lefferts even though the last one is narrower in places than some of the local streets.

Although it is only now being discussed, the Astoria Line was intended to turn east along Ditmars and continue east to serve parts of northern Queens. By the way, the Lefferts Blvd station is also not quite at Lefferts but is also about a half a block away from it. There are some other stations that aren’t exactly at the locations they are named for like the station formerly called Bway/ENY which is also about a half a block from Bway Bkln.

No -

The festival was called "Woodstock" and for the Ulster County location, but they knew the locals would never approve it there. They then planned it for the Town of Wallkill (not far from the present day station) After the promoters made posters, tickets, started building the stage the town decided to essentially ban the thing, by enacting strict public assembly laws and such....four days before it was supposed to start!

If the same 3/400,000 people had shown up at Wallkll, it would have a REAL disaster..

My pet peeves:

Eastern Parkway on the IRT. Just "Brooklyn Museum" is all you need at this point. There are several stations under Eastern Parkway.

"Jamaica" as the name of the 179th St station on Hillside. Along the way out to there on the F line, you pass two other stations that are in Jamaica (and arguably closer to the area that people think of when they hear "Jamaica"), plus there's another terminus somewhat nearby called "Jamaica Center" and there's a Jamaica Van Wyck station on the way to that. Did 179th really have to become another "Jamaica?" If anything call it "Jamaica Estates" but I wonder if local residents may not like their neighborhood so closely associated with the subway.

The Jackson Heights on the 7 at 82nd St not being the same stop as the Jackson Heights on the E/F/R/V.

That would explain the mid-block location, as well as the entrance being mid-station, as opposed to at the end of the tracks like many other terminuses like Woodlawn, 242 St., etc.

Harriman isn't in Harriman, it's in Woodbury. I think they just wanted to recycle the names of the nearby stations that used to be on the Erie main.

That also would explain (maybe) that the original destination listed on all cloth rollsigns from Standards to R-38s listed Astoria instead of Ditmars Ave or Blvd since the line never actually reached Ditmars. Don't know what was shown on Lo-Vs or gate cars that ran there.

All those Jamaicas can't compare to the proliferation of Actons in London's tube - Acton Town, Central Acton, East Acton, North Acton, West Acton and South Acton. Not to mention the almost equal number of Ruislips, Ealings, and Claphams.

The thing with those London stations is those are their actual names, much like 86th Street, 96th Street, and 103rd Street all have "Street" in them but you can clearly tell the difference. With Jamaica - 179 St, including Jamaica as part of the name is entirely unnecessary and opens the door for needless confusion, when 179th St would have easily sufficed.

Queens Plaza vs. Queensboro Plaza, while potentially also confusing to first-time riders at Lexington/59th, at least is a clear difference evident in the first word of the station title.

A set of four stations that could use a good cleanup on station names are 138th-Grand Concourse, 149th-Grand Concourse, 3 Ave-138th, and 3 Ave-149th. It can easily confuse new riders, it takes forever to recite those names and at least some of them, IMO, should be given London-style title names. All of those syllables, and yet there are four different 125th Street stations in Manhattan, none of them with secondary names.

Although the roll signs on the steels didn’t actually read “Ditmars” the station signs did. Originally, they read “Ditmars Ave” which was later changed to "Ditmars Blvd” and the small signs on the station lampposts had the initials “D.A.” even after the main station signs were changed. Also in many cases, the destination signs on prewar BMT cars indicated the neighborhood rather than the actual street names of the terminals like”Jamaica,” “Canarsie” and “Astoria.” Even the “Coney Island” reading was more indicative of the area since the actual name of the station was “Stillwell Ave."

I'd still like to see the 57th St. station on the BMT Broadway line with, "Carnegie Hall" included. My argument has always been Carnegie Hall was already there when that line was built. Maybe it's a matter of naming rights.

Lincoln Center didn't exist when the original Contract One line was built, yet 66th St. carries the Lincoln Center label.

I still say it's an injustice that "Carnegie Hall" was never added to the 57th St. station signs.
