Looks like it. There were 2 of these built by the Magor Car Co to be used on the revenue collection trains of the IND and the original numbers were 66 and 67. 66 was used on #7 Collector which operated out of Jamaica Yd and covered the IND lines in Bkln and Qns. 67 was used on #8 Collector which operated out of 207 St Yd and covered the IND lines in Manhattan and the Bx.

Actually its an R-8A. The R-8 order was for a Crane Flat Car No 71.

The R-8A order was for four flat cars, nos 07-10 and two revenue collection cars, nos 66 and 67.

The astute student will note the R-8a was always between revenue cars.
The R-8a did not have any M/M cabs or Marker Lights, so it could not lead or follow as a tail end car while in service. However it's fleet was augmented by.

From Wikipedia:

R8A was a class of New York City Subway revenue cars built in 1939 by the St. Louis Car Company, and used to gather and transport tokens from stations along the IND division. 66 and 67 were the only two cars built. Being blind motors, the cars were usually towed around by a set of out of service R1-9 cars. 66 was last operated in 1970, after which it was removed from service, and sent to Jamaica Yard Training Services, to be used as a shed. It was removed some time before 1990, and scrapped. Car 67 was used as a school car, until it was scrapped in April of 1986.

At one point, 66 and 67 were renumbered 20176 and 20177. Then, in the 1970s, they were again renumbered 30176 and 30177.

66 and 67 were not built by St Louis Car Co but by a company called Magor.

I wish reporters would learn their facts with impeccable accuracy before writing on a subject. At the time car 66 was built, there were no tokens, only nickels. Tokens were not introduced until 1953 when the fare went up to 15 cents.

Considering that the cars were still in use in 1953 and many years after, the caption is correct.
