The two tracks were originally in the center. They were later shifted to the North side, allowing a vehicular roadway on the South side. This photo is during the reconstruction process.

In earlier pictures, the two tracks are in the center and there are wide walkways on either side.
Interesting to have a photo from during the reconstruction.

Must have been a nice view from the trains.

Hello Express Rider & Northshore

This view is looking west towards the Queens facing Portal of the Queensboro Bridge, with a Manhattan bound 2nd Ave EL train operating on the by then NEWLY Installed Westbound track.

It was installed on the sub-steel longitudinal girders that originally (since 1909) supported the North side pedestrian walkway. Note the short connecting bridge from the Stone Elevator Tower to what was previous a paved pedestrian walkway -- now it connects, uselessly, to the new Manhattan Bound elevated track catwalk.

The Two other "center line of upper deck" tracks ARE the original Bridge tracks from 1917. The one at left is by then out of service and WAS the former Queens Bound track. The one to its right (or center of 3) is the former MANHATTAN bound track, then then being re-used and already re-signaled as the eastbound QUEENS BOUND track.

Note also that the NEW Manhattan Bound track at the right has steel rail inner guard rails....this application, started in the 1920's, replaced the heavy inner-track wooden guard timer rails shown on the 2 1917 installed original tracks.

Note the heavy timber inner guardrails of both of these two center tracks. These tracks were built and installed in 1916-17 and are by then 13 years old.

The track at the left (former Queens Bound track) will be removed, as already was and can be seen, the South pedestrian walkway, and their sub structure longitudinal girders will support a new deck for a 2 lane upper level roadway on the south half of the bridge.

When riding with my dad over the QBoro Bridge on the original south 2-lane upper roadway in 1951 thru 53 in my dad's 1949 Mercury, I recall seeing the abandoned ties and partially removed rails of the north side abandoned 2 trackways as we approached the Queens side of the bridge proper.

And also seeing the, by then abandoned since late 1949, "switch back tracks" created by and utilized via using the IRT side upper level 2nd ave El track to IRT side lower level 2nd Ave El track single island platforms.

Utilizing their former 2nd Ave El Manhattan Bound (lower level station) track westward up the bridge approach to the bumper installed on that track (in mid 1942) near that North Side Stone Elevator Tower.

Work and non-revenue trains traveling westbound stopped at the bumper, and reversed back eastbound downgrade and soon to a switch over to the Queens bound track and continuing to that up-rising ramp (partial abandoned remains still seen today) to the upper level 2nd Ave EL side of the IRT upper level platform, now used by BMT Queens Bound trains. Those "switch back" tracks still retained the original EL style 3rd rail to its deactivation in late 1949.

These were soon removed across the bridge north side sometime after 1953 or 54 for the planned and later re-construction for the new north half roadway 2 lanes. I don't recall when it opened exactly -- I rode over it with my parents -- I think around 1959-1960.

Regards - Joe F

I wonder how much the IRT had to pay the City to use the Queensboro Bridge!
