[PHOTO] West 40th St & ?

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Tue Dec 5 07:22:19 2017

Street sign says West 40th St & 6th Ave or 8th Ave ?
On topic because of new subway entrance. The buildings don't look familiar to me. What say you ?

The two tall buildings in the left foreground still stand. The background, taller one is Herald Towers, which is on the SE corner of 34th and 6th, and the foreground building is at the NE corner of 35th and 6th. This is facing southbound because 40th street is one way eastbound. The odd=westbound, even=eastbound pattern dates back to 1924.

Also, the building on the left is still there on the SE corner of 39th and 6th. So is the taller building immediately behind it on the north side of 37th between 5th and 6th. It is no longer visible from this corner, however, due to a taller building in the way.

I've seen this photo before. There's a higher-resolution version at the NYC Municipal Archives site. Zooming in makes it clear that it's at 6th Avenue. The newspaper headline is "Nazi Army Now 75 Miles From Paris" from May 18, 1940. Google's reverse image search feature comes in handy in cases like this.

Good photo and the headline NAZI ARMY NOW 75 MILES FROM PARIS dates it, and explains how there is a subway station UC but no 6th Avenue el remains.

The subway entrance looks incomplete. So subway service is happening ?

Man, look at those prices at the lunch market! A person could eat good for practically nothing in those days.

I did a google search on 'Nazi Army now 75 miles from Paris'

The newspaper (and photo) is from May 18, 1940.

That section of the 6th Av line didn't open until the end of that year (December 15, 1940)

Bill: In 1972 you could get a full breakfast for 95 cents. This includes two eggs, bacon, home fries, toast, juice and of course coffee.

The 6th Ave el was gone by April, 1939, along with the trolley tracks. The stairway pictured was boarded up until the subway opened, 7 months later.

Yes

The City and the TA worked out arrangements with builders who really did not want a subway entrance right in front of their building.

The arrangement allowed the building owner to place the entrance inside/as part of their building. They (the building owner) would maintain the entrance. Should the building owner decide that they no longer want to have an entrance to the subway inside their property, they would have to pay to have an entrance built on the sidewalk.

Although the building in the photo is relatively new, I believe that the street entrance was removed many years before with the building that was there previously.

I know this to be the case as I worked for Chase Bank for 34 years
in their Corporate Real Estate group (performing many functions) and had access to the agreements covering the subway entrances at 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza (now 28 Liberty Plaza) both the one on William St to the 2/3 Wall St station and the passageway under Nassau St to the 4/5 and J/Z.

The city does not always want those agreements enforced. I was an summer intern at MTA Real Estate in the mid 80s and saw a number of these agreements. I asked in the office why the Nickerson Building at 1100 Sixth Avenue (NE corner of 42nd Street) after renovating the building for HBO was not required to build the street entrance shown in their easement agreement when they removed the building entrance on 42nd east of 6th that connected to the extant one on 6th between 42nd and 43rd. I was told by office staff that the city did not want the street entrance because it would disrupt pedestrian flow on 42nd Street.

But the el was long gone. Sixth Avenue had no rapid transit service (except H&M) for a couple of years.
