Posted by TransitChuckG on Mon Dec 4 10:43:19 2017

From Mid-town Manhattan , probably the Greyhound terminal, what are the subway choices to get to Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn?

Thanks in advance.

Take the Brooklyn bound A train to Jay St-Metrotech. Walk 3 or 4 blocks south on Jay St (which becomes Smith St where it crosses Fulton St) to Schermerhorn St, turn right and walk 1 block west to Boerum Place. Museum entrance is just across Boerum Place.

Take the C train :). Not as nice a ring as the A train, but a good chance at getting R32s.

Can also take 2 or 3 (7th Ave. IRT), or 4 or 5 (Lexington IRT) to Boro Hall. Follow exit signs to Municipal Bldg, from the #4 platform. Walk one block east to Boerum Place, by Brooklyn Law School, turn right, and go two short blocks south to Schermerhorn St. and the Museum entrance.

Plenty. Buildings that are built to replace lots have garages.

I want to clarify that this is not universally true, but there are new garages in the area, so there is still adequate parking.

Rather tiny terminal for Greyhound in a major city. It's about the same size and style as the Buffalo (and Erie) one was, in use until 1975, now partially restored for other uses.

But this pic is from the 1930s. Maybe Greyhound was not as big an operation then.

Intercity buses really sucked before the Interstate Highway system was built. If you could possibly afford it, you took the train. Imagine going to Boston all the way on Route 1.

I still remember riding with my parents driving through Indianapolis in 1961 on the way to the southwest (I think St. Louis and Columbus already had some kind of halfway decent bypass but there was no way to get around or through Indianapolis except straight through the city). Miserable!

I remember driving up to Syracuse (as it so happened the day after JFK got killed) in November 1963. You pretty much had to take the NY Thruway. I think Route 17 portions might have been a mess with traffic lights or was not all there, I don't know. The I-80/I-380 option to get to I-81 was not totally in tact at the time.

All true. Heck, I remember getting to the Catskills with my parents using Route 9W.
And eastern Long Island via the Northern State plus Route 25A - before the Smithtown Bypass.

Yeah, if you're at Port Authority (I'm assuming that's where the Greyhound buses stop), the Lexington Avenue line isn't easy to get to, and the Seventh Avenue line isn't running to Brooklyn on the weekends.

When I was a kid in 1954 my parents with me drove to the Catskills for our annual summer holiday. The route. The GW Bridge to route 4 to route 17. What I remember the high light of the trip was a stop at something called the Red Apple rest. We stayed on route 17, the route 17 before the modern route 17 known as the Quickway. In every town, there was a traffic light. What a horror that was.

the Lexington Avenue line isn't easy to get to

The 7 runs frequently and its platform extends halfway to 8th Ave. There is an escalator up to the mezzanine at Grand Central.

Their choice. The Taconic Parkway to Route 199, and Mid-Hudson and Rip Van Winkle Bridges, predate all but the oldest of us.

I remember, as a kid, that the Sloatsburg, NY portion of Route 17 was an almost perpetual speedtrap. Coming off of the 50mph speed limit in
NJ and getting caught in their 30mph zone!
