Night layups in Queens question

Posted by Express Rider on Sat Oct 14 23:55:56 2017

I've always seen trains layed up at night on the express tracks of the outer portion of the E & F.
what sections of the express tracks (beginnings and ends) are designated for night storage, and what are the total number of trains that can be layed up on one or both of these tracks?
Thanks.

Northbound express. 11 F's from Parsons Blvd. on back to Briarwood. Another 4 from 169 on back.

4 E's from Kew Gardens back to 75th Ave.

IDN know how many M's and R's.

When the M first started going to Forest Hills, didn't they have to do something special overnight to guarantee that no M would accidentally leave the next morning with 10 cars? Do they still take those precautions?

No because M trains are not cut/added in JYD. They are all laid up the way they come in and stay as M trains the next day.

Nice! Thanks for sharing these track map photos! They are an aid that really helps to visualize how, and where the the trains are positioned for layups.

Back in the olden days when it was R-1/9 through R-40 equipment, I always thought it was more than the number quoted. When I was standing at the RFW on the 179th St bound train (my home stop was Van Wyck Blvd - hence my handle) I would count cars. I always thought it was about 1,000 or so cars stored there.

They would go from middle of 75th Ave Station to the east end of the platform at Union Tpke/Kew Gardens, then start just west of Van Wyck all the way to the east end of the platform at Parsons Blvd, then beyond the switches at Parsons to the east end of the middle track at 169th St. And always the Queens bound side, never the Manhattan bound side.

It was always setup never to be covering any switches through that area.

I read somewhere that they don’t put any M trains in the yard to prevent confusion.

Thanks. It was great that you were able to count the cars from the RFW on a moving train. I used this line too during those years and rememeber seeing R-1/9's layed up in these areas.

This was also my family's home station when we lived in Qns. Village; Bell Park Manor Terrace apts. from 1952-57 (corner of Hillside & Springfield) & my Dad worked in the city. I'd ride into the city at least once a week with my Mom & brother or whole family. Sometimes we'd come back late enough to see trains layed up then too.

Not true. There's M's in JYD. They just lay up there not serviced.

But no way it's 1,000 cars!

I said 'I thought it was 1,000 cars'. I was a kid at the time and the number was a guesstimate.
