Frequencies on the Atlantic Branch?

Posted by geoffc on Wed Aug 16 08:36:05 2017

I changed my route biking home, and now cross Atlantic at Vanderbilt, and I can see the open cut of the Atlantic Branch as it comes to the Barclay Center. Having ridden across this now a dozen times, I have yet to see a train in motion.

Of course, timing could be that I just keep missing trains, but after about 12 passings, I am surprised I have yet to see a single train.

How frequent are inbound and outbound trains at the terminal?

At the AM and PM weekday rush hours you are bound to see constant activity if you have a look at both directions at once. But weekends it is only every half hour in each direction. Have a look at the top section of this timetable.

I cross at Vanderbilt which is just east of the open cut as they tracks approach Barclays/Atlantic Terminal (I.e. I look west). The east side of Vanderbilt is covered. I see two tracks, and have yet to see a train go by in the morning or afternoon rush.

I concede I am only passing by in slices of 30 seconds at most, so it be completely conincidental that I have yet to see a train.

I have noted that in a 10 min crossing of the Manhattan Bridge, sometimes (last night) I see 11 trains, sometimes 1 or none. So obviously I could be just missing them.

It sounds as though you're looking at the yard at that location, not the two revenue tracks. Rush hours may not see too many yard moves. The two revenue tracks are still completely underneath Atlantic Avenue at that point. You might be able to see trains if you look several blocks to the east where the tracks emerge in the center of Atlantic Avenue to begin their run on the viaduct just west of Nostrand Avenue; it should be close enough without binoculars, though I am sure that someone will correct me if I am incorrect.

I agree with your explanation, except it's almost a mile along Atlantic Ave from Vanderbilt Ave to the LIRR portal at Bedford Ave so he wouldn't be able to see it from Vanderbilt.
