Posted by kp5308 on Tue Aug 15 20:24:10 2017 On August 12th & 13th the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum held "Railfest 2017" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of two of the major pieces of the collection: General Electric U30C #6300 and ALCO C630 #5308: The GE was repainted along with GP7 #621 within the past year. The EMD is going through a slow prime mover rebuilding while the "U Boat" has considerably more work to be done:  But the ALCO 16 cylinder 251 prime mover turns over & sounds ready to go. All machinery operates although we have not moved it under its own power in several years. Mike & the boys wanted to get the engine repainted but they just ran out of time so they decided to focus on the running gear:  There are just 2 US built C630s preserved & #5308 is the only one that runs so FIRE IT UP!  The only fully operational engine on site is NW2 #103. Most members didn't recall that the little EMD is celebrating 70 years since rolling out of La Grange:  There was a raffle held both days to start the engine, which turned out to be a good fund raiser. Anyone could visit the cabs of all the featured locomotives:  Unfortunately the first production GP30 got minimal cosmetic work done. I think it was a prudent choice to focus on the GE & GP7 to get as much done as possible with the volunteers available:  The real show stopper turned out to be Business Car #15. This car had a steady stream passing through all day with wide eyes everywhere:  The car was donated to the Society by the wife of the previous owner and is pretty much as built except for the equipment necessary to bring it up to then current Amtrak standards (2010). It made the trip cross county on scheduled passenger trains with an attendant on board the whole way, completely paid for by the estate of her late husband. Check out the interior:    Other pieces open were MU car #9123:   Tom was giving air brake seminars in the LEMTU (Locomotive Engineer Mobile Training Unit) #90847:   Rick did a fine job with the roller & brush:  The only car open during regular Museum hours (10AM-4PM Sat & noon till 4PM Sunday March thru December) is caboose #92832:  Inside the Museum are artifacts such as the Lebanon Valley Junction interlocking board. The structure is pictured in the top photo at right:  Models of all sizes:  And a monster archives room:  A mural painted by Carrie Kingsbury was dedicated Saturday morning:  The Munchkin Railway was in service & saw alot of traffic. The kids and adults loved it!   The railroad's "Bee Line Service" also celebrated 50 years with a cake! The service was a program started by the company with the goal of bringing freight business back from the highways to the railroad by traveling from origin to destination without stopping to set out or pick up cars or changing crews. The run had to be exclusively on RDG rails & ran up until Conrail. The trains were popular with the bigger shippers but were low margin moves:  Robert McGonigal, editor of Classic Trains presented a program on the history of Kalmbach Publishing railroad themed magazines at the Saturday banquet. On his left is Railfest chairperson Carol Adams:  Even the bus gang got in on the act. I rode this type bus all over the county to railfan as a kid:  If you are in the area on a weekend stop by 500 S. The look of wonder on the faces of the crowd is priceless. I am so glad I participated! Our regular meeting is on the 22nd & I'm quite interested in the report on how this all went. Glad the weather was nice too. Very humid on Saturday & when the sun was out is was HOT. The Saturday forecast was 50% chance fro rain which hurt us with the long distance people. The Saturday night photo session got rained out. Sunday was better with sun & clouds & no rain predicted. Unfortunately I needed to get some work stuff done. |
