The experts also point out that about 80% of Penn Station commuters and visitors will not set foot in Moynihan Station, which is between Eighth and Ninth avenues, because they enter the transit hub via its two main entrances on Seventh Avenue.
Fluff and waste. There is no "Penn Station expansion" here.

I once asked someone why the IND subway was built under 8 Ave instead of under 9th and was told that at the time there was “nothing there” presumably meaning that there was insufficient population west of 8 Ave to warrant a far west side subway line.

Yes..there was a IND plan to build a line under 10th ave,with a crosstown connector to the eastside 2nd ave route via 34th st.

Obviously, nother ever came of it, and the plan was dropped.
Today,such a network would definitely be extremely useful.

I thought the reason was that they wanted to build under CPW, and so they just continued in a straight line south of there. Building on 9th (Columbus) north of 59th would have been too close to the IRT.

I also think it is a ridiculous vanity project. We all have our own punch list on how that $1.6B would have been better used.

If they are going to build the concourse with a glass ceiling like that, they'd better make sure there is some powerful a/c installed. Sunny days in the summer will be brutal in there without it.

That would be Amtrak and some minority of LIRR passengers. Most Amtrak passengers will still walk through the existing Penn Station to get to Moynihan.

If it lets the light in, it lets the heat in, since the heat energy is in the light itself. It has to be glass that looks silvery from the outside (because it reflects most light), and strongly tinted from the inside (because it isn't letting most light in).

There are probably high tech solutions that are good at letting in visible light but still obstructing infrared wavelengths, but there are limits at how well that's going to work. And there is a lot of energy in the visible spectrum too.

LION has a Ninth Avenue Subway as part of his Myrtle-Fifth Avenue Subway.

The "Local" Trains from Jamaica Center will use the Orange Tunnel and remain on Ninth Avenue.

The Express Trains from 'points east' will run non stop from Jamaica center to Brooklyn Center, then to WTC via the Pineapple Tunnel and thence up 5th Avenue to 63rs St. Half via 86th Street Tunnel into Queens with stop at LAG OR Bedford Park, Woodlawn thence eat to CoOp City.


ALL new system, no connections with existing system, Linear Induction Power, 80 mph on express runs.

How did the original NYP not get roasting hot as balls in the summer? As we know, it has LOTS of glass. Perhaps there was then and is now glass that filter out some radiant heat ?

I've wondered that myself...
