Tuscarora Almanac for May 19 |

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Fri May 19 06:58:21 2017 Tuscarora Almanac – May 19, 1941 – The Book of Last Runs New York City Board of Transportation IRT Division Second Avenue El service will now operate Monday through Saturday from 5 AM to 9 PM. There will be no Sunday service. Source: New York Division Bulletin /October 1964, article by Mr. Bernard Linder Tuscarora Almanac - May 19, 1957 - The Book of First Runs New York City Transit Authority IRT and IND Divisions A free transfer point opened today between the southbound platform (only) of the Bleecker Street Station on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and the Broadway-Lafayette Street Station of the IND 6th Avenue Line. When the platforms were extended at the Bleecker Street Station to accommodate longer trains the northbound platform was extended north and the southbound platform was extended south and this resulted in the unusual free transfer arrangement. The southbound platform was extended in the late 1940s. The northbound platform was extended in the early 1960s. I always wondered why they did the asymmetric extension and didn't provide for the transfer to the northbound side when the did the latter extension. |

The platforms are now directly across from one another and you can transfer to the 6 going n/b as well. The new transfer also puts things in perspective regarding platform depth at Broadway-Lafayette. |

The story I heard was that there was a service station which had its underground gas tanks right in the path of where a south extension would have gone and the owner of the station refused to move or be bought off at any price. |

Having watched the building of the extension on the NB side a few years ago, looking at what was underground and the buildings, I don't quite believe this. You already had the IND entrance that was reopened, the entrance at Bleecker is not blocking anything, and the buildings had always been there. |
