"The "EE" should have been assigned another lettered route, to avoid any possible confusion."

There was plenty of confusion in the beginning when the "EE" service was covered by R1-9s and half of the rollsigns identified the train as "8th Ave Local".
If I was in a position of authority back then, I would have made damn sure that the destination roll signs were correct. If I only had cardboard, duct tape & Magic Marker to get it done, like was done on the #7 when a few main line R-33s showed up there in late 1963 (before all the WF R-36 delivery was completed)& did not have "Main Street" on the side and front signs, then so be it

It was bad enough that the route was assigned some of the oldest cars in the fleet, at least they could have been signed right.

I remember the Ns to Whitehall and the rush hour local runs on Broadway. I remember the story of a family friend telling my Mom that her son needed to get to Whitehall Street one day, and was simply told "take the N". He didn't know that only a few ns went there. I'm not sure if he wound up in Brooklyn or figured out before hand to switch to the RR.

But from the frustration with which the story was told, I suspect the son wound up at Pacific Street!

Why they eliminated the EE designation but kept trains running the exact same route, just calling them a type of N train, has always puzzled. It may have had to do with a change of equipment - they got rid of the R7s/R9s that ran on the EE and replaced them R42s and such from the pool of cars used for the N. They may not have had EE signs, or changing them back and forth between EE and N whenever they changed southern terminals may have just been too much effort. But did the service continue uninterrupted under the new designation, or was there a gap of a couple of weeks? I thought that the EE was cancelled, then brought back as a type of N a few weeks later due to passenger complaints, but I'm not 100% sure. Also, I'm thinking that running the N local S/B in the AM and N/B in the PM came later, when the Manhattan Bridge troubles started. Anyone have the actual dates?

I was working on the road at the time those changes went into effect and the change from the EE to the N was seamless. If you remember it was right at the start of the NYC fiscal crisis and extending the N to Ctl even with the extra mileage was a saving of both crews and equipment over keeping a completely separate line with its crew and equipment roster.

I remember looking so forward to getting shiny new R32s on the Queens Blvd local when the N was going to replace the EE (with its old and noisy R16s), and then being so disappointed that first day when an R16 N arrived at 63 Drive!

Why did this change occur? Did this have to do with scheduling or ridership?
