The immediate cause of the 1946 coal shortage was a United Mine Workers strike, which lasted, with some interruptions, from April 1 to November 21 of that year.Alan Follett Hercules, CA |

Which was cheap then and less work than coal, but lots of businesses still used coal and I liked watching the coal rumble down the chutes to the basement. |

As a reference point, CTA's last freight customer, Lill Coal Company, operated until at least April 30, 1973, when CTA delivered its last train of hoppers to them. I believe this was the last coal yard in Chicago.Alan Follett Hercules, CA |

I live now in the Pittsburgh area & once in awhile take the train to NYC. One train (very crowded most times) a day just don't get it done. There was talk of someday another Pittsburgh-Harrisburg train where you could connect with a "Keystone" to get to Philia. & NYC. If thats all you got, thats what I'll take. But The talk went nowhere, blaming NS/CSX for not allowing it(no room), which I'm not buying for a minute. If its a $$$ funding issue, they should be able to syphon off a few bucks from the highway robbery PA turnpike tolls to help with financing. After all, they raise the tolls every year, some of that $$$ should be earmarked for better rail service. But, realistically, its just wishful thinking.Sorry for the rant. Usually not my style. |
