interesting G.O. for the "M" train this March

Posted by caine515 on Wed Feb 22 10:50:57 2017

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
the following is a upcoming G.O. for the "M" line. This reroute makes no sense;

No trains between Myrtle Av and Metropolitan Av
Shuttle Free shuttle buses provide alternate service
Weekends, 11:45 PM Fri to 5 AM Mon, Mar 3 - 6 • Mar 10 - 13 • Mar 17 - 20

M service operates between Essex St and Myrtle Av and via the J/Z to/from Broadway Junction.

I don't understand why you would run a "M" to begin with on the weekend. Wouldn't it make better sense to run extra "J" service instead?

More Js means more trains needed. And people might wait at Essex for an M that never comes.

Effectively, it is extra (short-turn) J service. But M trains have been running to Essex St. on weekends for a while now, and these trains are probably run using the crews and equipment that would go to Met if the line wasn't closed. So, they are labeled M trains.

these trains are probably run using the crews and equipment that would go to Met if the line wasn't closed. So, they are labeled M trains.

But it no longer seems to be policy to label trains according to what they are seen as operationally, given the "Q via Sea Beach."

The least confusion to passengers in this case would result from having some J trains being short-turned and M service suspended. Then basically all the announcements have to say are: "No M service" and the worst that can happen is that someone has to get off a short-turned J and just wait for the next one. Instead, by calling them Ms, they have to explain that M trains are not going where they ordinarily go and people who miss that will be inclined to go the wrong way.

While things will be different on weekdays when this type of thing is happening, for weekends without a Myrtle Ave branch there is no need to designate any train "M."

Possible...but the it has nothing to do with labeling.
It JOBS.
What do you do with those M crews, who would otherwise be sitting in crew rooms getting paid for doing nothing?

There was a time when the TA designated jobs on lines that were in danger of being modified or eliminated as “T” or temporary jobs meaning that employees who picked them did so “on chance” that the runs could be either adjusted or eliminated entirely allowing those employees to be reassigned to the extra list in seniority order. Doing that would eliminate the problems with what to do with idle crews when their line is suspended.

They need the full length for rush hours, and cutting trains every day is more labor intensive than cutting them once Friday night and rejoining Sunday night.

Kindof like how Fulton/Nassau And Broad St were closed weekends but kept open weekday overnights - only going through the effort once a week instead of every day.

IIRC while the G was still supposed to run on Queens Blvd on weekends, but was cut 49 weeks a year due to GOs, they didn't bother having the extra crews needed for the full length as picked jobs. AFAIK the Court Sq short turn schedule was the main one and the full length was a supplement!

Yup. Look at how many people can't understand the simple "everything is running local/express in one direction" situation. I was thinking the best way to keep people from waiting for a local (or express) that never comes (since they ignore the pink tape) would be to just park a work train in the station on the track that's closed.

Yes, I know there would be other problems, but I'm thinking of the "would the R160 with CBTC on run into the R32?" angle.

Actually, since you have the (A) and (C) rerouted via Rutgers anyway at least a couple of weekends I believe, that is something I would look at doing with the (C), having that run to Broadway Junction and experiment with having the (S) that normally runs to Broad Channel from Rockaway Park run to Broadway Junction (as an express between Broadway Junction and Euclid while the (A) is local the full run of Fulton).
