The war was over by 1946. So why was there an Office of Defense Transportation telling the railroads, or anyone, how much coal they could or couldn't burn? (This certainly wasn't about saving the environment by not burning coal.)

indeed. part of the chain of events leading my Chicago grandfather to switch to natural gas from ComEd.
