Looking at the station today, it's hard to believe that no express service was provided at Woodside. Was it just not a busy stop, even with the LIRR beneath? |

My mom lived in Woodside by herself at the time after my father died.I'd visit & stay overnight once a week. Then the next morning I'd walk to 61st to catch a #7 local (only) to the city to get to work. While waiting for my train, an express would always come thru w/o stopping. Sometimes those expresses would fly thru. Once a train was going so fast I could see the last truck of the last car shimmy side to side. I believe the railroad term is "hunting".Often wondered what the speed limit was for subway trains that highballed stations. Some trains would crawl thru. Anyway, the locals & many LIRR folks that used the station screamed like hell. The TA caved & express service resumed. |

The rule was and is more than 15 MPH passing thru a station w/o stopping. In those days supervision wasn't as diligent in enforcing that rule as they are today. A t/o would be taken out of service in a NY Minute today. |

It was meant to be permanent. They printed up a series of subway maps that changed 61st Woodside to a local stop to reinforce & inform of the change. IIRC the Fisk interchange project didn't happen for another 10 years. Someone at the MTA thought it was a good idea to speed up the commute from Willets Point ( big "park & ride situation there) & Main St at the expense of Woodside patrons. |

The current rule has been modified and is now that the train may enter the station at normal speed but must be going no more than 15 MPH by the time the first car reaches the leaving end of the platform at which time the train may resume normal speed. |
