Interesting, but makes sense. One change to account for some of the lower ridership is the lack of late evening service. Ignoring Trump, once upon a time Friday and Saturday nights would be quite busy for Metro. Now people are just carpooling to go clubbing since cutting the night short at 11:30 to catch the last train is lame. |

Metro history was and will be January 20, 1977 (Jimmy Carter's inauguration) when the entire system was 7 stations served by a single line (the 7th station opened on January 17, 1977, just three days prior). From WMATA history. "January 20: Jimmy Carter's Inaugural Committee charters $170,000 worth of Metrobus service and rents rail system for 2.5 hours to move crowds." During that era WMATA opened 6 AM to 8 PM weekdays except holidays and weekends. If memory serves that 2 1/2 later closing added around 3,000 trips to the normal daily Metrorail number. I was one of them as I used Metrorail to get to my night job back then. Did read that e-mail I sent you? Here is the all of them. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

It's weird to say the White House is straight-out lying, but that will be the new reality.Of course, that's just an alternative fact... |

I've been swamped with email lately, I know that I need to get to yours. The e-mail had a link to a Silver Spring destination sign that I later discovered has some dimensional errors. The link above has what I consider to be reasonable good reproductions of the real thing. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

Nothing new about that. Nixon and truth had an adversarial relationship. And as to Presidents haranguing the press, look up JFK's tantrums about NYT coverage of Viet Nam. The WH officially cancelled the subscription to the Times over David Halberstam's reporting. |

Thank you, Oren. The actual numbers are always worth having. As to the liar-in-chief, the less said the better.Gotta say, for those of us old enough to have been involved in the civil rights and anti-war demos of yesteryear, the authorities always claimed much smaller numbers than the participants. Funny to have the shoe on the other foot. |

Someone with a lot more time on their hands would have to do the analysis to see how the varying system hours impact the ridership totals. That said, my guess is that the evening ridership probably doesn't change a whole lot due to the inauguration, especially as the night goes on. In other words, whether the subway closes at midnight or 3 AM isn't going to change the ridership totals much. |
