Holiday Train 1300 The Real Story

Posted by Lou from Brooklyn on Wed Dec 7 17:51:35 2016

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
I will not be answering questions, I was asked to share this. Take it as you wish but this is what happened Sunday the 4th to the R9 Holiday Special.

Car 1300 experienced a dropped armature, meaning the roller bearings in one traction motor (an upgrade made on all the R1/9s during their service life) failed at speed. This resulted in one axle locking up, which in turn meant the wheels attached to it were no longer turning. This caused damage to the wheelset as it was dragged. There was no warning it was going to do this, which is one of the bad things about roller bearings - older friction style ones tend to make a bit of smoke and give off all sorts of interesting noise before they fail.

This happened while on the way to Second Avenue, well after leaving the yard, but not while carrying passengers.

The train was placed in Second Avenue and we did one trip with 5 cars, which due to the tremendous popularity of the train was simply not enough. Bill Wall made the decision to not continue the schedule for the day in the interest of the regular service not being delayed. That is our first priority, period: DO NOT TIE UP THE ROAD - REGULAR SERVICE COMES FIRST.

Temporary repairs were made to move 1300 back to 207th Street, which was done on Monday night. It needed to go very slowly, due to the nature of the repairs, which included welding the wheels. It made it back in one piece. Restricted speed moves are done at night when needed, which is the protocol. Delays are expected when these moves are done. It is unavoidable.

This particular problem had nothing to do with anything but itself, no matter what others may speculate. Bearing failures happen on even the newest cars. Minor issues pop up on all trains at anytime, and the museum cars are no exception. We know these cars intimately and deal with things accordingly. To have something like this happen is beyond frustrating.

Note that this is the first time we have ever had to cancel a holiday train in the 12 years we have been doing this and other trips as well. If anything, that in itself is impressive.

Once the holiday season is over, 1300 will be evaluated as to what repairs will be needed and how best to go about it. We will be running this weekend with a seven car train.

Lou:

Thanks for clarifying what happened. We were on the run from Queens Plaza to Second Avenue when the announcement was made.

The people who go year after year, and I count myself among them, appreciate the work Bill Wall and his crew do to keep the train running. I'm glad you confirmed this was the first time a holiday train was cancelled, as I never remember any issues other than a stuck door here and there.

Robert

And it is not the first time that a museum car has had problems like this. IIRC, R-17 car #6609 was part of a consist in regular service on one of the holiday runs along the #7 some years ago, and somehow, and possibly, the brakes locked up on the car at Times Square. Getting that one out of there was no mean feat either, and #6609 has not been seen since, not even back at Court Street.

If the C/R operating position is set up with the D type on one side of the C/R and the R-9s on the other, the doors don’t have to actually MU.
