Re: Run R 1/9s as the first official train when 2nd Ave. subway opens.

It harkens back to the 1969-70 timeframe when all of a sudden mixed consists became commonplace on IND and BMT lines. You'd see everything and anything thrown together. The only mixed trains I ever saw were R-32/42 D trains. Now, the term, "borgaschmord" is an anagram of the word, "smorgasbord." There was a series of commercials for Underwood meat spreads back then and they illustrated what could be done with a can of spread - it was like having a smorgasbord in a can. Well, they took it a step further and hired a kid named Mason Reese to do a commercial for Underwood from a kid's point of view. When they got to the end of the commercial, Reese said, "borgaschmord" instead of, "smorgasbord." I'm not sure if it was intentional, but right after he said it, you can hear some other kid bust out laughing. That term has stuck with me ever since.

The point I was trying to make is that it wouldn’t have been appropriate for the city to borrow equipment from either of the private companies that the IND was designed to put out of business. The SAS situation is entirely different.

While it wouldn’t have made sense to borrow historical equipment for the EAS (Eighth Avenue Subway), it wouldn’t make sense to use historical equipment for the SAS either.

IAWTP. Use "r160ies" or whatever for revenue service but run a fan trip with historical equipment within 1 month of the opening.

The SAS was originally supposed to be part of the IND. The plan is at the south end whenever the line is completed to lower Manhattan, trains would run through the Cranberry St. tunnel into Brooklyn where they would connect with the Fulton St. IND subway where the A & C trains currently operate.

Whoever said running historical equiptment anywhere, anytime made "sense" Its for reminding folks of where we've been v/s to where we are going in terms of NYC mass transit. So whats wrong with that?
Running R-1/9 equiptment that one time on the SAS would drive home that point big time IMO.

I read the main reason they were pulled prematurely was because the R-32s were being delivered so rapidly that storage space was at a premium and the powers-that-be had to decide what to do to make room.

And if it had been built when planned, some 70-80 years ago, a consist of R1-9's (maybe R7-R-9's) would have been the first train to open the line.

The modified plan for the IND called for a new tube to connect the SAS with Court/Schermerhorn St via a new tube. Prior to that Court was to be connected to Hudson Term (E) via a similar tube and reclaiming the BMT between Cortlandt and Whitehall.
