Come to think about it, is vomit considered to be a biohazard? If so, how would it be properly disposed of?

Considering that the subway *is* an amusement park for some, this advice from Disney might help:

There's a whole range of products that purport to absorb and deodorize vomit.

This seems like a joke, like it's from the Onion or something (actually, it's from heypaul....)

I mean, New Yorkers can't just step around and avoid a pile of puke on the subway? There must be at least 93 incidents every 24 hours of people puking on the subway. If we're going to raise the alarm, treat every one of them as a biohazard incident, and put up a "Service Status", the system will never run...

Sheesh...

I think what escalated the concern here was 6 or 7 other people feeling light headed or nauseous after the initial regurgitation. Then there was concern that maybe there was some toxin in the air that was affecting people. So they had to call Roscoe to the station to see if there was a serious problem.

Our training says that if one or two people "fall", no problem. But if more than 3 fall, you better start getting people outta there!

Monday Morning Quarterbacking is easy. Obviously all those people going down could have been caused by some terrorist. You evacuate, then investigate. Obviously no one thought it was puke at the time. In fact, I never heard of puke bringing so many people down. I would like to know WTF was in that person's belly!

Maybe Mexican + Indian mixed together? Maybe some sour milk + whiskey to wash it all down?

I see your point- large number of people start passing out- better take the situation seriously. But how wimpy are NYers getting that they can't handle a pile of puke on the subway.....?

I remember one late night operating on the J a couple yrs ago. I get to Broad to go through the relay and in me and partner's efforts to clean out the train in the 2nd car the man was passes out in his own puke. What was amazing /disgusting was how much puke this man produced. It covered literall his whole half of the car and I had to fight not to puke myself. Me and my partner had a heck of time getting this man off the train (he slipped and fell in his own puke on the way out). I called it in and since Broad had no cleaners at that time we had to isolate the car to have it cleaned back at Parson's. We had to tippy toe around that crap to lock out each door(Had a R42). Once we got to Parsons cominf back the cleaner damn near had a hazmat suit to clean that sucker out didn't blame him one bit...lol

NTTs with puke?

Posted by MainR3664 on Thu Dec 1 14:07:50 2016, in response to Re: Vomit Forces Evacuation at Harlem Subway Station, posted by ftgreeneg on Thu Dec 1 12:03:43 2016.

Ok, I gotcha now. I guess this shouldn't surprise me. This leads me to a few technical questions:

1) On a NTT, could you lock out a car centrally? 1a) can you do that from the screen in the T/O or C/R's cab- or do you need to actually turn a key in the subject car?

2) I'm gathering it's permissible to operate a train in revenue service with a car locked out? 2a) I assume that if you lock all the regular doors on a car, you also have to lock the end doors, to prevent anyone from going in there- even though it's illegal to pass between cars..?

1. No on NTT trains the crew still must still manually lock out (basically cutting out the door motor's ability to recieve the message to open & close the doors) each set of doors.

2. Yes as long as it's not operating cars(1st and last cars). I believe CR's car can still be isolated and stay in service the CR can just change positions but not 100% on that.

Thank you. Believe it or not, I'd thought about this in terms of what could be done if someone pukes and/or shits on a train.

What surprised me about this story was that OTHER people passed out from the puker's puke. But again, considering a homeless guy's bad diet and probably unhealthy guts, I suppose it's likely that his puke would be foul- even compared to normal vomitus.

I'm glad that the affected car can be isolated and the train stay in service. I'm also glad that the car cleaners have protective clothing for these situations.

About three years ago something VERY embarassing happened to me. I was returning home from a business meeting on an A train. I am a professional and dress in suits every day. It was in the winter and I had an overcoat on over my suit.
I am a migraine sufferer.
I starting to feel ill. When the train arrived @ Rockaway Blvd I got off and went downstairs to buy OTC medication. I waited about 30 minutes and started to feel a little better. I went back onto the A train and found a foward facing seat on the R-46 car.
As the train started to approach Fulton Street, I felt so sick there was NOTHING I could do.
I felt the vomit rising and I tried to hold it. I then felt like I was choking and it unfortunately projected outward. I immediately ran out at Fulton Street. There was nothing I could have done. I thought about going to the end door but they are locked on the R-46.
WHat a nightmare
