The R-11/34 is not at the Transit Museum now, and it is most likely at 207th Street Yard-Shops, along with the R-16 plus other SMEE cars (except the R-38 pair, which is at Court Street as a placeholder). The R-1/9's would be ideal too for the 2nd Avenue subway opening too, since that was a route proposed back in the 1920's with the rest of the IND being built and planned. -William A. Since this rendition of the SAS is a functional extension of the BMT, the R11/R16/R32 would more more appropriate. The R32 never saw the IND until Chrystie. I still think of them as the last BMT cars. |

The portion on the north side at 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue has BMT chaining codes [G3-G4], but when it makes that left turn upward under 2nd Avenue, it assumes the IND chaining codes [S1-S2]. It could go either way with the SMEE's or R-1/9's.-William A. Padron ["Lex/63"] |

Yeh and the Dyre Av line has IND track and signal numbering. But as far as anyone is concerned, it's the IRT.The rider doesn't care about "chaining codes". The SAS is an extended BMT service. Someday, we'll call the full length SAS to lower Manhattan the BMT "Northern Division", semi-isolated from the rest of the system. |

I don’t agree. The Second Avenue Subway will have been opened in 2016 or 2017, not 1932. They should run the newest train, R-160s or R-179s.They didn’t drag out old Hi-Vs when the IND opened in 1932, they used the brand new R-1s. |

I can vouch for that. I rode from 42nd St. to 14th St. every Saturday beginning in the fall of 1967 and prior to November 26, all you ever saw on the AA and Ethel lines was R-1/9s. By December, the R-32s had completely taken over on the AA and D. I had to wonder if the R-38s slept on weekends back then. |

Actually, the scuttlebutt was that the R-32s were supposed to be assigned to the IND Queens lines, but they went to the BMT instead. I’m only guessing, but I surmise that the intent was to sent the R-1/9s to the BMT and scrap the ABs and the Ds (which they did anyway). As it turned, both the BMT and IND prewar equipment was in such bad shape that it was decided to send the R-32s to the BMNT first and scrap all the Ds and unrebuilt ABs rather than send the BMT just another bunch of falling apart cars. |

A few R-32s started to show up on the D about a month before Chrystie, probably to get the crews used to them. Although there were large numbers of r-32s on the AA/B and D, I wouldn’t say they had completely taken over those line since there were quite a few R-9s on the AA/B into the middle of 1969 and as late as 1971, there were R-9s on the D. |

There shouldn’t be any difference in the car thresholds between the R-1/9s and the R-11 since they are both identical width. If there is any difference at all which I doubt, it would be less than 1 inch. The 7 1/4 difference is more like the spacing between an IRT car and a BMT/IND car. |

It would have made no sense whatsoever to use either Hi-Vs or any sort of BMT equipment for the opening of the IND since the iND was strictly a city operation and the other equipment was property of the 2 private transit companies. The only reason the R-1s ended up on the BMT prior to the opening of the IND was so they could be tested under actual operating conditions and any problems addressed and that was done by agreement between the city and the bMT. |

Yep, the 3950s. I attended John Dewey HS during the 1974-75 school year, and when on the athletic field, I would see them passing by on the Sea Beach ROW to/from STL, Darth Vader brakes and all. :) This was in the fall, by the spring of 1975, I didn't see them on the N anymore.
