Originally electrification would go as far as Port Jeff, but Ronkonkoma was electrified instead.

FALSE.

Plans for electrification were only to Northport or Smithtown - - not to PJ.

Wasn't a two track part of the set from Huntington all the way to port Jefferson?

Complete Port Jeff electrification proposed by Gov. Rockefeller, 7-27-1973. Plans for partial electrification seem to have emerged later. So, not false.
One issue for extending electrification is the grades on the branch. In the worst weather a few times a year, they won't send the MU's east of Hicksville, since they have a tendency to get stuck in Cold Spring Harbor. One can imagine that being a problem on both sides of Smithtown, or west out of Greenlawn.
