Late Night R to Whitehall St |
|
Posted by MainR3664 on Tue Oct 18 17:40:09 2016, in response to It's coming..., posted by K. Trout on Tue Oct 18 00:57:53 2016. Observed just today that signs for this service have been placed on the center track at Whitehall Street.I wonder how needed this service really is, though. As I see, the vast majority of riders late night customers will only ride between Whitehall and 36th- which will be covered by the N. The few folks riding further south can switch for the R at 36th. Yes, I know it's nice for these folks to not have to make a switch. But if they're going north of Whitehall, as probably most will, they'll have to, anyway. So I wonder if this plan is really cost-effective. |

It is productive for those Bay Ridge passengers who would be boarding at Jay/Metrotech, transferring from the D at Dekalb or the IRT at Barclay. When I change from the late night N or D at either 36 or 59, there is a large number of passengers waiting for the R shuttle many of whom probably got on at Jay or Barclay. |

Sure, the R extension won't give many direct rides, but it will change lots of 3 seat rides into 2 seat rides. Instead of only having connections to the D and N, the R will connect to the A, D, F, G, N, Q, 1, 2, and 4.That is a big change! |

Ok then, I guess if as you recount, a large number of people ware waiting for the R shuttle, then maybe extending it is a good idea...But in that case, why not extend it to 34th or 42nd? (I almost suggested 57th, but I just remembered that those center tracks won't be available for turning trains much longer!). I'm sure there would be usage in SoHo, Union Square, and Midtown. The Whitehall area is still a bit ghostly late at night. |

The problem with the N running exp all the way is that there are R layups between 36 and 59 on the S/B tk and immediately post PM rush, those layups stack on the N/B exp tk in the same area until they are completely swung to the S/B tk. I would be extremely doubtful that midnight Ds would run exp since the exp tks are needed for overnight work train and transfer moves. |

The running time difference between an express and local is about 5 minutes. When there is 20 minute intervals with sloopy connections, it is more of a disadvantage than advantage to have expresses. |

Which is why Ctl as north terminal of the R is a better idea than returning it to Astoria as some on this forum have suggested. Imagine how many layup spaces would be needed if most of the layups were in Bkln or the amount of congestion there would be N/O 36 St if all the layups had to be turned back to either 36 St Yd or CI Yd. |

I remember in the 1970's that along many of the subway lines outside of the rush hours plenty of trains were stored along the "middle tracks" of the elevated sections of the line. Again this was BEFORE the reduction in the number and types of subway cars, during the great graffiti wars, and before the memory of most young-ins.I bring this up, because in those days, I could easily believe that many RR trains could easily have been stored on the Fourth Avenue express tracks, the layup area at City Hall, and along the middle track in Astoria, and maybe a few at Coney Island. I remember plenty of trains stored along the #6 middle track both above and below the Parkchester station. Plenty of #2, #4 and #5 trains were also placed at certain sections of the middle tracks in the past in the 1970's or before. --- I of course agree that the situation has changed over the decades, and I'm not suggesting that certain practices return. The problem is that in order for a layup to get from 95 St to 36 St Yd, a train has to go north to 36 St Xover to the exp tk (which can also be done at 59 St), relay on the N/B exp tk N/O the station Xover to the S/B exp tk and then over the West End tks to 9 Av middle change ends again to get into 36 Sy Yd. That requires blocking the N/B exp tk during the time that it takes to change ends N/O 36 St and to minimize the time blocking the track, providing an additional T/O to double end the move. The only other location that requires a similar move is a layup from Flatbush to N/Lts Yd but in that case, the changing ends can be done in the Nevins St spur, avoiding blocking any mainline tracks. Midday layups on the R can be accommodated by short turning the layups at 36 St allowing the train to be moved directly to 9 Av middle and not block the mainline, something that can’t be done in the PM since all service is needed through to 95 St. |
