Off-hour waiting areas |
|
Posted by jesse_coburn on Thu Sep 29 19:48:06 2016 Hi everybody,I'm a freelance journalist in New York, beginning to work on a story about off-hour waiting areas in the city's subway system. These are the well-lit benches usually just inside the turnstiles, within eyeshot of the station agent, that are marked by large yellow signs (http://www.subwaynut.com/bmt/20d/20d12.jpg). I'm trying to make a list of all the stations that still have these waiting areas, and I was wondering if anyone here could share if they knew where more of them are. Here's what I have so far: On platform: 6 - Astor place E/M - 5th Ave / 53rd St SIR - Tottenville Partially on platform: 6 - 51st St Not on platform: G - 21st St / Van Alst D - 20th Ave, Brooklyn Thanks for your help! You do know, Jesse, these are a vestige of the 1970's - 80's when riding the system late nights was akin to playing Russian Roulette - you could die anytime.Today with the crowding 24/7 on most stations, coupled with lower crime rates and video monitoring, you can hang anywhere on the platform and not worry about being killed. |

There is also another related issue - the shorter trains of the mid-1970's.These shorter trains meant that riders had to stand in certain places to be sure to be able to quickly board the train versus running down the platform and missing the train. Yes, I do know that the waiting areas were installed at a time of high crime in the subway system. And yes, I do plan to ride around looking for them on my own. I just thought that subway aficionados like you all might know where some are off the tops of your heads.Michael549 - that's interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks. |
