Lou, the only way you can avoid the LIRR concourse is to exit Penn Station to the street on the 7th Av side, then walk up to W34th St and enter the subway to the downtown 1 train (or cross the street by the H & M store for the uptown 1 Train). |

Not sure why no one has directly answered your question, but here: You can avoid it with the NJT East End Concourse (front of NJT train) and the Hilton passageway. Once in the NJT concourse, go down the steps towards the LIRR concourse but make a quick right before track 13. You can then get to the IRT's 32nd st entrance (the other end of the Tracks bar).Image (not mine) available here, the green-ed out section is where you'd be starting:  Good luck! |

After you walk towards the IRT (1)(2)(3) fare control area, there's handicapped elevators to take you to the platform level. Metrocard machines are there to refill your card. Bill Newkirk |

Sunday-Wednesday evenings (and of course all overnights) it's pretty deserted. During the daytime though it's surprisingly well patronized nowadays, and the booth is open.Good advice though, because it is dimly lit and the IRT end is a favorite for homeless to camp out. |

If you take one flight of stairs vs. two, you'll get to LIRR level vs. Amtrak level.That puts you in the NJ Transit concourse. Then it is a level walk (1/2 flight of stairs) into LIRR concourse to you reach the 7th Ave entrance of subway. Token booth & many MVMs are just out side. I use NJ Transit now, so I'm familiar with NJ Transit area. |

You never have to show ID to use a subway system elevator. Lots of people use them because they are pushing strollers. Since strollers and other things (like big packages) are allowed on the system, and absolutely don't belong on escalators, it is entirely reasonable. It is disheartening to see moron parents with their babies in strollers on escalators when elevators are available. |

Most escalators have signs or stickers indicating what should not be brought on them. BART would be an exception if they permitted strollers.
