I still can't understand why they would have gone to the trouble of having (looking uptown)the downtown lines duck down after 59th and the uptown ones scotch over to the lateral position of the downtown lines. Ok, maybe they didn't want subway entrances on the park side of CPW, but they still could have a one-level 4-track line with cross-unders for uptown passengers |

But why not have the uptown entrances be on the park side of CPW. I'm thinking that back then crossing CPW was considered more inconvenient than walking down an extra flight of stairs (yes, I know I'm mixing the two directions here, but that's the net effect), but now with more awareness of handicaps, they wouldn't have done the 2 flights of stairs. |

If anything, the current design saves on an elevator.Also passengers would have had to cross the streetcar ROW on the east side of CPW. |

The IND 8th Ave. line including the segment under Central Park West was constructed 1925-32 and opened Sept. 10, 1932. Moses did not become the NYC Parks Commissioner until January 1934 after then-new Mayor LaGuardia appointed Moses to the new position, which consolidated the five separate borough park managements into a single citywide Parks Department. |

A group called "Friends of the Park" had enough power to block having anything built on the east side of CPW in those days EXCEPT for 59th and where the park ends at 110th Street. |

For whatever reason, they did not want to excavate under that part of the street. After all there were no buildings on that side of the street, why make people cross a busy street when there was no need.Maybe there were heavy utilities there? On the Assumption (and that is assuming a lot) that all of these people along 8th Avenue wanted to go downtown, the down town tracks were below the uptown tracks, it is easier to walk down two flights than to walk up two flight. Maybe is the only place where the ease of commuters was taken into account. ROAR |

Since the IND built most local stations with a mezzanine, nobody would have to cross the street. With the two level system, most people only ascend one flight of stairs instead of the standard two. |

However, the concept was the same. the Manhattan bound platforms along E/Pky are on the lower level so that passengers going to Manhattan walk down 2 flights but passengers coming from Manhattan only have to walk up one. Along CPW passengers from uptown go down 2 flights bit exiting passengers from downtown only have to walk up one. |
