Riders Hop Aboard Nostalgia Train in Brooklyn-Queens |
|
Posted by heypaul on Sun Aug 28 06:51:55 2016 Museum Nostalgia TrainI was interested in the reporting of the railfan "who challenged a reporter to name two points in the city’s 469-station system, so he could recite travel directions by heart. He was right every time." I'm assuming that the reporter mistakenly described the process as memorization of all possible combinations. |

Like that railfan Michael Kam, who had his phone pressed up to the window the whole way down. There's also that asshole who was wearing the blue bucket hat and floral shorts, along with the fat guy who always brings that camera and small tripod. These people ruin it for everyone. As far as I can tell, there were three actual crew members with vests up there, one seemed to be instructing the train operator and the other two were doing their best to maintain civility at the window |

There is a money making opportunity here, charge for the window in 15 minute (or whatever works) increments.Watch all those cameras disappear. |

And by "monopolize" I mean "don't share". I'm ok with someone standing up front for an entire trip segment, but they should stand in such a way that they block a minimal amount of the view for everyone else standing up by the railfan window. That means standing sideways (assuming that's your thinner dimension), no tripods, and no keeping a largish video camera against the glass the whole time unless it is at the very edge of the window and you're not taking up a whole ton of space with the logistics of doing so. |

Even back in the day when RFWs were the norm, there was always the a...hole who would park dead center across the bulkhead door so that nobody else could get a decent view. When I rode at the RFW, I would always stand off to the right to allow for at least one other individual to share the window, and in the event of a child, I would step back to let the youngster right up to the window and I would stand behind and look over his/her head. |

I knew the road the first day I started to qualify on the routes because I fanned all B division lines by looking out the RFW so I knew my lineups.Sadly with these transverse cabs, future t/o's will not be able to do that. |

If the T/Os obey the rules and don’t cover the cab door window with last Sunday;’s NY Times, then railfans at least have a fighting chance of studying the ROW. |

Once in a while, I'll do the RFW on the J line but when an interested young one wants to look out, I go have myself a seat. I pretty much RFW'd every route in the subway with exception to 2nd Ave so I'm really not missing much. Besides, I get my fare share as a motorman on the PATH so believe it or not, its a blessing to just sit and relax without worrying about signals and line-ups lol. Doing this long enough, even if you're just joy riding, it can't be helped your work brain kicks in as if you are operating, quoting signal aspects and speeds in your head lol.Vader |

The only problem I've found, is since the glass in the door is polarized, lights and signals have star-like distortion. I find that to be very distracting so usually don't look out the window too long for that reason. However, it's better than nothing at all. |
