The fact it happened in a safety surge zone may not have any connection to the derailment itself. I don't believe the interlocking where the derailment occurred has been maintained as part of the program as trains have needed to use it to switch tracks at the beginning/end of the single track zone. If WMATA was strategic about such things, it may have gotten quite a bit of TLC during the various Silver Line construction related shutdowns in that area. |

Minor derailments happen on every system.This one was not that minor. The cab ends of the 3rd and 4th cars are roughly 3' right of center. Not a derailment that can be put back on the track with wedges and blocks. The interlocking has guarded #8 turnouts. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

I read somewhere that the WMATA spokesman said that the cars were "in line". Didn't look like that to me because just looking at the cars it was obvious to me it was a derailment. |
