The pics of the "Train of Many Metals" remind me of the 1969 period when they tried to intermix different BMT/IND cars in one consist a la the IRT SMEE mix-and-match of the period up to the '80's; it was not uncommon in '69, based on photos taken "back then," to see an R42 intermixed with R32's or R38's or R40's (both slant and modified) to say nothing of R27/30's, R10's (especially on the A) and probably occasionally R16's. (Of course, since no two sets of BMT/IND cars looked alike, for the most part, between the R10 and the R42, this mix-and-match didn't take hold the way they did on the IRT "A" division with R12 to R36 cars.)Other than that small detail . . . I join in the salute to those pics, and especially that little display along the Brighton line. |

R-32s wouldn’t have been in the mix with slant 40s, since at the time the 40s both slants and mods were strictly assigned to IND Queens lines. There were, however, mixed trains of R-40s both slant and modified, 42s, and 38s in the same train with bulkhead doors locked between the 4o plans and anything else due to the different type of safety chain brackets. I had train one Sunday on the RR that had 2 R-32s, an R-16, 2 R-27/30s, an R-16 and 2 R-42s. Mixes of R-032s and 42s were also common on the D and the B. Even mixes of R-10s and 42s happened although those were extremely rare. Mixes of R-16s and 27/30s were also relatively common on the RR. |

The mixture of R-10's with R-42's would have largely been confined to the A line. But that RR consist you spoke of sounds almost similar to what many West Side IRT riders (and to a lesser extent, East Side IRT'ers) would see in the 1970's and '80's - even, in 1972, WF R-36's in "trains of many cars" running on the 1 line. |

Posted by randyo on Wed Jun 29 16:54:29 2016, in response to Re: PHOTOS: Parade of Trains Saturday, posted by W.B. on Wed Jun 29 06:53:45 2016. There were several factors involved in the IRT’s smorgastrains of the 1960s and later. While the BMT and IND car equipment departments chose to group cars by car type, the IRT car equip dept decided to assign cars to maintenance barns by electrical manufacture. Initially, the IRT did attempt to keep the R-12s and 14s in separate trains from the other cars since they had caps and triggers as opposed to the rest of the IRT fleet which had in cab door operation. Occasionally, there would be a mixed train but it proved to be problematic if the cars at the C/R position were inadvertently assembled with incompatible door controls. When radios were first installed, the antennas on the cars were rather large and interfered with C/Rs operating on the steps and in many cases causing injuries, so the IRT supt banned R-12s and 14s from C/R positions. For some strange reasons, the ban also was extended to the R-15s even though they had in cab door controls. It seems that all the “Queens Cars” were forever excluded from C/R positions. When the BMT and IND cars were fitted with antennas, they were a different type and music smaller and were safer to use on cars with caps and triggers like the R-10s. The R-12s through 15s were retrofitted with the smaller antennas but even after that, the IRT supt chose to keep the ban in effect on all lines except for the 3 Av el which did have solid trains of R-12s. |
