It would be somewhat like Middle Earth. I'd keep a lookout for large, omniscient eyes; you don't want those ;-)One addition: Interstate highways will have no specific speed limit outside metro areas other than "don't be a jerk", same as the Autobahn. That was Eisenhower's original intent. Of course, enough people would choose passenger trains to make them viable again... while we're dreaming. |

Liberty is the be all and end all of good government.Democracy on the otter hand is rule by the vast uneducated mediocrity. The Republic that I have proposed side steps most of that while leaving the legislature to the people where it belongs. And by the way, has eliminated the head of state. ROAR |

A strong Coast Guard reserve with station in every coasta town of any size would be able to provide fast hurrycane relief. No shortage of hurrycanes down there. If a hurrycane threatens say Galveston, then the coastal reserves there will evacuate with their families and then go into action in the refuge city to provide for their needs, while coastal reserves from other areas will man the Coastal Station in Galveston, using equipment already in place to protect the city and any remaining people who did not get out.You do not have to wait for the creation of the Middle Republic to do this, It SHOULD be in place on all of the eastern US coastal cities. But you need good government to get that done, and that we have not , hand have not had for more than 16 years. ROAR |

Such ignorance. The national debt doubled because of all the Bush-era spending coupled with the 2008 economic collapse that removed the ability to pay. Printing money doesn't cause a recession, it causes inflation, which is the exact opposite. If money is being printed so readily, where is the inflation? Why are interest rates so pathetically low? |

Am no ex-pert, but I can guess:i) When the size of the economy expands, more total money units are needed. ii) When the money of nation X becomes a desired means of exchange and value storage among other nations, more money is needed or it will be scarce. There's both a windfall and hazard for nation X, if they treat the demand for their money as if it is a real export product, they'll get accustomed to getting imported goods for basically nothing. iii) There may be an effect related to have fast money changes hands. In system where stuff circulates (say, trains going around a loop), the faster stuff moves, the less of it you need to keep a pipe filled. I dunno exactly how this works regarding money, but I suspect the systems have some common behaviours. iv) There is a powerful need to avoid deflation - each money unit becoming more valuable. It sounds great; every dollar you have is worth a little more tomorrow. But it quickly goes bad: You wouldn't want to borrow to buy a house, because the mortgage payment would effectively go up every year. But you wouldn't want to pay cash, because tomorrow the same house will cost fewer dollars. Deflation is actually a disaster, because it causes an economy to go into death spiral such as the Great Depression. --- The public constantly demands something for nothing. To supply this demand, politicians give them deficits, which require issuing more money to pay for the new debt interest. The economy may expand fast enough that the gimmick causes no harm, or it may not. |
