The Sunnyside yard is not used by the LIRR ... the LIRR is making a yard/repair shop west of Sunnyside as part of East Side Access. However, at one time the LIRR freight operation used part of the Sunnyside yard. |

I have many great memories of that monumental place. I'm 66, born in 49. Raised by 75th St & Roosevelt Ave. We would ride our bikes to SSY. We'd leave our bikes in the weeds along Skillman Ave, and down the embankment. We would hang out by the double, now single, underjump that led to the loop and the wash racks. There would be cars from a dozen different roads going thru the wash racks. We rode the "name " trains around the loop. And stole all the loot we could! Silverware, dishes, glasses, towels, etc, etc. Still have stuff off the Broadway Limited, the Congressional, Spirit of St. Louis. My Mom was a waitress, then the hostess, in the main dining room, the Savarin, at Penn Station fron 1937 till the sad end in 63. The Old Man was a Pennsy Patrolman from 1947 to 1950 before joining the FDNY. They met in Penn Station! I spent quite a bit of time as a kid roaming around that grand place too. . |

Hi Rat, I was talking about the double underjump that is opposite 33rd St. Just West of Honeywell St. One track was taken out some time ago. And stole all the loot we could! That's how it was. From the LIC side, you could walk unto the old Yard A from Northern Blvd near Queens Plaza and those railcars were full of all sorts of stuff. Bicycles, car batteries, electronics. All sorts of stuff. A different city it was. |
