Very interesting, albeit brief, read. I'm liking that downtown is again becoming important, despite what others here say when I suggest a new rail station there.

The funny thing is that downtown has the greatest concentration of subway lines in the city -- from the era when it was the Financial District. For a time, all these stations seemed a bit superfluous, but not any more!

Parts of a duplicative, or yet to be replaced, el system in Manhattan and Brooklyn were still in place in 1948.

So with less in-service trackage today, we have more riders.

With longer and more crowded trains.

10 car A and 8 car C trains have replaced the Fulton el's 6 car trains.

10 car F's have replaced 6 car Culver-Nassau's.

People on 6 car 2nd and 3rd Ave el trains are on the Lex, and those trains have grown in length.

The list goes on.

How many are "riders" sharing cards between one another?

About the same number of people in 1947/48 who were paying another fare to make transfers at places like Times Square, thus counting as another 'rider'.
