Apparently the skylight can open, I think originally the "wings" themselves were going to move? Or at any rate, more than just the skylight.The terminology used is interesting. At the PATH station, the "Oculus" refers to the whole interior space, while the skylight has a different name ("Wedge of Light"). But at the Fulton Center, the "Oculus" is specifically the skylight. And of course, there is a third "Oculus" in the area, the artwork at the WTC subway station, which predates the other two, and may have been the inspiration for using the term at the two newer stations. |

The oculus is opening in the top of any domed structure. At the US capitol form the outside it has a decorative doodad with its own dome on top of that. Very typical in doomed structures.ROAR |

Neither the PATH station nor Fulton Center is truly a "domed" structure. The fact remains, the agencies that run them use the word "Oculus" in different senses. The description of the new PATH station calls the main hall of the station, which is sort of eye-shaped, the "Oculus". At Fulton Center, the term "Oculus" is used to refer to the skylight, or at most, to the vertical structure capped by the skylight; people don't walk around inside that "Oculus". |

As far as I know, there will be no free connection between the E & R. In fact, both the DN article and a news release from the PA imply there won't be any connection with any subway line (including the Dey St corridor) when the PATH Oculus opens in March, only a vague promise that the connections will open later in the spring as the long delayed Westfield Properties undergound mall gradually opens in stages. |
