[PHOTO] Question about apparent subway entrance at Duffy Square

This photo of Duffy Square appears to show a subway entrance present in the location where the TKTS booth currently stands. As far as I know, the 49th St N/Q/R station has abandoned staircases to the street on the east side of 47th St/7th Ave, but none on the west side of 47th St/7th Ave that would have come up in to Duffy Square.

The 50th St IRT station doesn't reach this far south, and the 42nd St - TSQ complex doesn't reach this far north.

If the staircase in the photo is for the subway at all, what did it lead to?

Why would you think it could possibly be a subway entrance?

If you enlarge the photo a bit, you will be able to see the letters "EN" faintly painted on the far wall of the stairwell. So this must have been an underground men's restroom.

There is a possibility it is not an entrance

I concur with this assessment. The station plan for 49 Street shows "comfort station" for that corner, with no indication of any former entrances on that spot.

Since it has no signage,I would hazard it may be an exit only staircase.
