1950 was a horrible year on the LIRR as there were two other major wrecks, one in Huntington (the last involving two steam powered trains on the LIRR) and the other on the western edge of Rockville Centre. There were injuries but no fatalities in the Huntington wreck and 31 deaths and 159 injuries in the Rockville Centre wreck which was one of the worst in LIRR history until the Richmond Hill/Kew Gardens accident which occurred on 11/22/50.

Wasn't there also a wreck somewhere in the Central Islip area around this time. I remember reading an account of the wreck wherein Suffolk was so sparsely populated that rescue services were overhelmed.

Shyster Sidney Siben, was at the scene handing out his card to the injured before the ambulances arrived. Talk about ambulance chasing !

I don't know since I wasn't around then. Train accidents weren't that uncommon in those days due to the primitive nature of the equipment and lack of maintenance by the LIRR due to its poor financial condition which mirrored that of its parent the PRR. Penn Station also became very run down in that era despite being (and still is) the busiest railway station in North America. Thankfully today the LIRR is a much safer railroad.

Sandy Koufax's parents usually took that very train that was involved in the Rockville Centre crash. That day they just missed it. Someone was looking out for them.
