As long as you addressed it, I never understood why the R-17s were originally painted maroon while their sister cars the BMT’s R-16s and the follow up IRT R-21s and 22s were olive drab (or “subway green” as the contract books describe it).

I never understood why the R-10-12-14s were painted in two tone grey with the orange belt stripes & headbands. Washing equiptment was still many years away. Someone should have thought that inside of a year, the original colors would be difficult to notice, to say the least. So why bother?

I can’t figure that out either but the first postwar cars for Boston were painted in that same scheme. It even got fancier with the maroon and grey racing stripe paint scheme of the R-15s. The only thing I can figure is that the B of T might have intended installing car washes much earlier than was actually done.

The IND was known to be very conservative and unprogressive with their equipment design from the R-1 and onwards as they were crushing the BMT's innovations. Racing stripes was a cheap way to market they were otherwise when they in fact were not.

I suspect that the main reasons that the R-1/9s lacked many of the more advanced features that the BMT steels and other BMT equipment had was that those amenities were patented by the BRT and its successor the BMT and since the IND was initially intended to put the bMT out of business, the city wasn’t about to pay patent royalties that it didn’t have to.
